Giulio Alliata was an Italian writer on theoretical physics active in the first decades of the twentieth century. Writing in German and publishing chiefly in Leipzig, he developed a system he called Äthermechanik (aether mechanics) and was a persistent critic of Albert Einstein's theory of relativity.

Biography

Alliata was an Italian author who produced his physical writings in German and had them printed in Germany, primarily by the Leipzig publisher Verlag Otto Hillmann, during the 1920s and 1930s. His books circulated within the early twentieth-century body of German-language literature opposed to Einstein's relativity theory, and he is generally classed among the scientific outsiders (wissenschaftliche Außenseiter) of that period.

Work

Alliata's central project was an Äthermechanik, or mechanics of the aether, intended as an alternative to the prevailing models of physics. In this framework space is regarded as filled with an aether composed of very small, light atoms held under high pressure, and this medium is used to account for phenomena such as force, radioactivity and the motions of the planets. He applied the scheme across a series of monographs treating the general worldview of aether mechanics, radioactivity, planetary anomalies, and the nature of force and the unity of the physical worldview.

A parallel strand of his writing was directed against relativity. In Verstand kontra Relativität (1921/1922) he argued against the theory and sought to demonstrate the translational motion of the solar system, appending a discussion of experiments by which such motion might be detected. His later Unzulänglichkeiten und Irrtümer der Physik (1934) continued this critical program, presenting what he regarded as shortcomings and errors in contemporary physics together with his own proposed reconstruction.
