Robert Guy Grantham (born 5 November 1942), who publishes as R. Guy Grantham, is a British chemist and independent physical theorist. A Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC), he worked in chemical research and manufacturing before turning his attention to theoretical physics, and is best known as a proponent, archivist and expositor of the electron–positron lattice (epola) model of space developed by Menahem Simhony.

Biography

Grantham spent his working life in the chemical research and manufacturing industry, retiring in 1999 from the post of Technical Manager. His professional interests included the techniques of analytical chemistry, photochemistry and process technology. From about 1970 he developed a strong interest in theoretical physics, which he pursued alongside his career and continued after retirement.

He lived in Sudbury, Suffolk, before moving to Lincoln, Lincolnshire, in 2005, where he maintains the epola website and correspondence on the model.

Scientific contributions

Grantham's principal work concerns the electron–positron lattice (epola) model of space, first proposed by Menahem Simhony in 1973. In this model the vacuum is treated as an elastic crystal lattice of bound electrons and positrons, regarded as an aggregation state of matter intermediate between the nuclear and atomic states. Grantham has argued that the model offers explanations for a range of phenomena in fundamental physics, and he has served as Simhony's archivist, collecting and publishing the material through the epola website.

Working with the model, Grantham examined the propagation of electromagnetic waves as vibrations of the electron–positron lattice, presenting this as a possible route to reconciling quantum mechanics with relativity theory. In collaboration with Ian Grant Montgomery he proposed experiments intended to test implications of the model for atomic stability, and discussed how the lattice parameters relate to physical constants such as the fine-structure constant. He presented work justifying the vacuum as an electron–positron aggregation and proposing means for its experimental falsification at the 8th Symposium Honouring Mathematical Physicist Jean-Paul Vigier (2013).
