James Andrew Barrett is an American inventor, author and independent researcher known for his work in cardiac biofeedback and for his study of the Shroud of Turin. He is the author of the book The Silent Gospel: The Science of Divinity, Creation of the Shroud of Turin.
Biography
Barrett describes himself as a researcher of human potentiality, inventor, natural scientist and lecturer, with interests spanning heart intelligence, biometrics, biofeedback, the Shroud of Turin and what he terms "holophasic physics". Beginning in 1995, he pursued the development of a heart-based biofeedback device, collaborating with a former human-machine interface control systems analyst from Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio to build what he described as a real-time cardiac biofeedback system. In June 2009 he filed a provisional patent, titled "Quantum Qualtum Chroma Covariance Method & Apparatus", as co-author of principles he called Holophasec.
In March 2000 Barrett's 27-year-old son died unexpectedly. Barrett has said that the loss prompted him to redirect his focus from device development toward research, writing and lecturing on human potentiality, consciousness and the Shroud of Turin. He has resided in Santa Barbara and Nevada City, California, in the Sierra region of the state.
Work
Barrett's principal published work is The Silent Gospel: The Science of Divinity, Creation of the Shroud of Turin (2007), in which he argues that the image on the Shroud of Turin encodes a message and blends what he calls ancient Eastern science with modern Western science to interpret it. He contends that the spatial data recorded in images of the Shroud is inconsistent with painting or photography and instead suggests that the image formed while the cloth was draped over a human body. His related interests include sacred geometry, Buddhist Dzogchen practice and the concept of the "Rainbow Body", and correlations he draws between accounts of Ascension and Light Body attainment. He has also written a screenplay treatment of the Shroud's history under the same title.
