Franklin Hu (born November 1, 1963) is an American software engineer and independent researcher who develops alternative theories in physics. Based in the Seattle, Washington area, he has worked since 2003 on a self-styled "theory of everything" that seeks to explain a wide range of physical phenomena using only the electron, the positron, and the electrostatic force. His ideas lie outside the mainstream of accepted physics, and he has been an active member of the John Chappell Natural Philosophy Society, both presenting his own work and hosting the society's online science discussion series.
Biography
Hu earned a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1986; his undergraduate thesis described a lexically based approach to natural language processing, work for which U.S. Patent 5,297,040 was subsequently awarded. His professional career has been spent as a software engineer and software entrepreneur, with positions at Data General Corporation, Mosaic Software (where he worked on the TWIN spreadsheet), Software Publishing Corporation (Harvard Graphics), and Microsoft. In 1991 he founded Intellect Systems in Renton, Washington, which produced the WinProof grammar-checking program, and from 1997 he worked at Concur Technologies in Redmond, Washington, on early web-hosted expense-reporting software. He also developed the Seattle PictureBox screen saver for the retail market.
Hu pursues his physics research independently in his spare time. He resides in the Seattle area and describes himself as the father of five children. He has stated that he began working on questions of fundamental physics in 2003, publishing his results primarily through his personal website and independent platforms such as viXra, ResearchGate and Academia.edu rather than through peer-reviewed journals. Alongside his scientific writing he maintains a personal website covering a wide range of other interests, including RV travel, home renovation and educational projects.
Scientific contributions
Hu's central proposal is that the only fundamental particles in nature are the electron and the positron, and that the only fundamental force is the electrostatic force. On this basis he attempts to construct a unified "theory of everything" intended to account for the relationship between matter and energy, antimatter, Planck's constant, hydrogen spectra, atomic structure, magnetism, gravity, dark energy, time dilation, the strong force, mass and inertia.
The electron–positron sea
A recurring element of his work is an aether-like medium, which he calls the electron–positron sea or "electric sea": he posits that space is filled with a neutral, crystal-like matrix of bound positron–electron pairs forming a neutrino-like particle. In this framework the fixed spacing of the matrix is said to give rise to quantization and Planck's constant, while mass and inertia are attributed to particles moving through the medium. He interprets the mass–energy relation E = mc² as the result of breaking the bonds of this aether matrix, and treats magnetism as the alignment of tiny dipoles within the sea, polarized by moving charges. Time dilation, in his account, is a consequence of varying aether density — clocks in a denser region of the medium running slower than clocks in a lighter one — and dark matter and dark energy effects are attributed to density variations and buoyancy in the medium rather than to exotic new particles.
In arguing for a physical medium, Hu draws on the interferometry literature favoured by aether researchers, treating the Michelson–Morley result as inconclusive rather than definitively null, citing Dayton Miller's observations and later rotating cryogenic cavity experiments as evidence of non-null results, and pointing to the ordinary atmospheric electric field of roughly 120 volts per metre at ground level.
Cubic atomic model
Hu proposes an alternative atomic model, which he calls the "cubic atomic model," in which atoms are built from alternating cubic arrays of protons and electrons rather than from a compact nucleus surrounded by orbital shells. In this scheme the proton is itself a composite of two positrons and one electron, while the electron is genuinely fundamental. He argues on this basis that quarks do not exist and that the strong and weak nuclear forces are unnecessary, and he has attempted to derive the spectra of helium and lithium and the periodic ionization-energy pattern of the elements directly from the geometry of the model.
Gravity as an electrostatic effect
In his treatment of gravity, Hu suggests that gravitation is not a separate fundamental interaction but a manifestation of the electrostatic force. He proposes that ordinarily "neutral" matter carries a very slight residual positive charge, because the positive and negative charges within an atom do not exactly cancel, and that this small imbalance produces the attractive effect observed as gravity. He has also proposed that a simple bound state of a positron and an electron could serve as an alternative to the Higgs boson in explaining mass, inertia and magnetism.
Dark matter
In more recent work Hu has argued that the observational case for dark matter in spiral galaxies rests on a misapplication of Newtonian mechanics. The relation v = √(GM(enclosed)/r) used to predict galactic rotation curves is, he notes, derived for spherically symmetric mass distributions, and he contends that it cannot be applied directly to a flat disk galaxy; on his account the anomalous "missing mass" appears only because a spherical formula is being used on a disk-shaped system, and the observed rotation curves can be recovered from the visible matter alone once the disk geometry is treated correctly.
These proposals are not accepted by the mainstream physics community and have not been published in peer-reviewed physics journals; Hu presents them as an alternative to standard models of particle physics, gravitation and cosmology.
