Franklin Hu (born November 1, 1963) is an American software engineer and independent researcher who develops alternative theories in physics. Based in the Seattle, Washington area, he has worked since 2003 on a self-styled "theory of everything" that seeks to explain a wide range of physical phenomena using only the electron, the positron, and the electrostatic force. His ideas lie outside the mainstream of accepted physics.

Biography

Hu works professionally as a software engineer and pursues his physics research independently in his spare time. According to his ResearchGate profile, he holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He resides in the Seattle, Washington area and describes himself as the father of five children. He has stated that he began working on questions of fundamental physics in 2003, publishing his results primarily through his personal website and independent academic platforms rather than peer-reviewed journals.

Scientific contributions

Hu's central proposal is that the only fundamental particles in nature are the electron and the positron, and that the only fundamental force is the electrostatic force. On this basis he attempts to construct a unified "theory of everything" intended to account for the relationship between matter and energy, antimatter, Planck's constant, hydrogen spectra, atomic structure, magnetism, gravity, dark energy, time dilation, the strong force, mass and inertia.

A recurring element of his work is an aether-like medium: he posits that space is filled with a neutral, crystal-like matrix of bound positron–electron pairs. In this framework the fixed spacing of the matrix is said to give rise to quantization and Planck's constant, while mass and inertia are attributed to particles moving through the medium. He proposes an alternative atomic model, which he calls the "cubic atomic model," in which atoms are built from alternating arrays of protons and electrons rather than a compact nucleus, and he argues that quarks and the strong and weak nuclear forces are unnecessary.

In his treatment of gravity, Hu suggests that gravitation is not a separate fundamental interaction but a manifestation of the electrostatic force. He proposes that ordinarily "neutral" matter carries a very slight residual positive charge, because the positive and negative charges within an atom do not exactly cancel, and that this small imbalance produces the attractive effect observed as gravity. He has also proposed that a simple bound state of a positron and an electron could serve as an alternative to the Higgs boson in explaining mass, inertia and magnetism.

These proposals are not accepted by the mainstream physics community and have not been published in peer-reviewed physics journals; Hu presents them as an alternative to standard models of particle physics, gravitation and cosmology.
