Luigi Maxmilian Caligiuri (born 30 November 1972) is an Italian theoretical physicist known for his work on coherent quantum field theory, quantum vacuum energy, and superluminal phenomena. He is a professor of physics at the University of Calabria and, since 2013, director of the Foundation of Physics Research Center (FoPRC) in Italy.
Biography
Caligiuri received his laurea in theoretical physics magna cum laude from the University of Calabria in Cosenza, Italy, in 1995. He subsequently carried out research and teaching activities at the University of Calabria within its Faculties of Sciences and Engineering across several fields of theoretical and applied science. He became a full professor of physics in 2001.
In 2013 he became director of the Foundation of Physics Research Center (FoPRC), an independent research organization in Italy devoted to advanced research in physics. He has also participated in science-communication activities through popular essays and television programs.
Work
Caligiuri has published papers in peer-reviewed international journals of physics and engineering in fields including theoretical physics, acoustics, biophysics, electromagnetic fields, and materials science. His stated research interests span quantum mechanics and quantum field theory, cosmology, biophysics, photonics, foundations of physics, condensed matter physics, and classical and quantum computation.
Much of his recent work applies coherent quantum field theory to a range of topics, from fundamental physics and cosmology to proposed mechanisms of brain function and consciousness. He has written on quantum vacuum energy and zero-point energy in the context of gravity manipulation and space-propulsion concepts, and on superluminal physics, including proposals for the propagation of coherent photons within neuronal microtubules treated as metamaterials. With Takaaki Musha he co-authored The Superluminal Universe: From Quantum Vacuum to Brain Mechanism and Beyond (2016).
Honors
Caligiuri serves on the editorial boards of numerous international journals in theoretical and applied physics.
