Bob Ticer (born October 3, 1943) is an American self-taught writer and independent researcher on physics and cosmology. A native of Childress, Texas, he worked as a cannery worker from 1961 to 1999 before devoting himself to writing and self-education in physics. He is the author of several books and science-fiction novels dealing with gravity, cosmology, and the relationship between science and mysticism, and is a member of the Natural Philosophy Alliance.
Biography
Ticer was born on October 3, 1943, in Childress, Texas. He earned his living as a cannery worker from 1961 to 1999, and pursued writing and research as a means of becoming self-educated in physics and independent thought. Seeking to compare his own ideas about gravity with established theory, he enrolled in a class on Einstein's relativity at the University of Oregon. He has lived in Eugene, Oregon, and maintains a personal website as an aspiring writer.
Describing his outlook, Ticer has characterized himself as a free thinker who enjoys challenging assumptions and who considers himself neither liberal nor conservative. He describes himself as an idealist in his belief that natural abilities should be free to excel, and as a realist in recognizing that people are socially interdependent and that one person's freedom can become another's restraint.
Work
Ticer's writing spans physics, cosmology, philosophy, and science fiction. His non-fiction and speculative works focus on developing alternative explanations for gravity and on questioning the internal consistency of theories in modern physics, including special relativity, general relativity, and quantum physics. After studying established relativity theory, he concluded that it was internally consistent, and framed his own ideas as complementary to conventional science rather than as a refutation of it. His work also explores connections between science and mysticism.
His published books include Explaining Gravity (2001), The Relativity of Gravity (2002), Help from Afar (2003), Gravity, Quasi Black Holes, and Cosmic Relativity (2004), Visiting the Strange Planet Called Earth (2005), the novel The Hummingbirds Will Help (2010), A Mystic History in Light of Physics (2014), and the later Explaining Gravity: Simple, Consistent, and Complete. He has also written the booklet Physics 101 for Shooting Pool.
