Sol Aisenberg (1928 – March 24, 2014) was an American physicist and inventor. He held a Ph.D. in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) and is credited, with R. Chabot, with the pioneering deposition of diamond-like carbon films, a field of research he helped originate in 1971. He was president of the International Technology Group in Natick, Massachusetts.
Biography
Aisenberg was born in 1928 in Brooklyn, New York. He graduated from Brooklyn College and earned a Ph.D. in physics from M.I.T. He also held part-time appointments as a staff member at M.I.T., as a lecturer at Harvard Medical School, and as a Visiting Research Professor in the Bioengineering Department of Boston University. Over a long career as a physicist and inventor, he accumulated numerous patents and publications. He resided in Natick, Massachusetts, and died on March 24, 2014, at the age of 85.
Work
In 1971, Aisenberg and R. Chabot reported the preparation of hard, amorphous carbon films by direct deposition from low-energy carbon ion beams, work that is generally regarded as the beginning of research into what became known as diamond-like carbon (DLC). Aisenberg is credited with coining the term "diamond-like" to describe these films. Such films are noted for their high hardness, wear resistance, low friction, chemical stability, and infrared transparency, and have since found broad application in coatings and optics.
As president of the International Technology Group in Natick, Massachusetts, Aisenberg continued to work across a range of applied physics and bioengineering topics.
