Robert "Bob" de Hilster is an American scientist and retired electrical engineer best known for his work on The Particle Model with his son David de Hilster and for his proposed solution to the wave–particle duality of light. Over a career spanning more than 40 years in telecommunications he was awarded several patents, and in retirement he has become a prominent voice in dissident physics, developing a particle-based model of gravity in which gravity is a pushing force rather than an attractive one. He was one of the central figures in his son's feature-length documentary Einstein Wrong - The Miracle Year, which premiered in 2013.

Bob de Hilster is the author of three books: a work on gravity, Gravity is Not Free (2015); Principia Mathematica 2 (formerly titled Universe Hack 3.0), which sets out the Particle Model developed with his son David de Hilster; and The Four Universal Motions in Physics.

Early Life

Robert "Bob" de Hilster was born on August 21, 1937 in Wyandotte, Michigan, to a Dutch father and an American mother. Bob attended a Lutheran school through the 10th grade before transferring to Wyandotte High School, where he met his future wife Pat de Hilster. In 1957 he married Pat and moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to study engineering physics at the University of Michigan. While he was in college, he and his wife had their first son, David de Hilster.

Professional Career

Robert de Hilster worked as an electrical engineer in research for over 40 years, specializing in telecommunications, a field in which he holds several patents. Early in his career he worked on one of the first large commercial computers, the Remington-Rand Univac. He then spent more than twenty years at North Electric in Ohio developing digital switching systems, followed by roughly another twenty years at Itec in Huntsville, Alabama, again in telecommunications. After that, he and several colleagues formed their own company working on portable lighting for runways, among other projects. Robert retired in 2005 when the company was wound down.

The Particle Model

Together with his son David de Hilster, Bob de Hilster is a principal developer of the Particle Model, an attempt to describe the entire physical universe using a small number of real, sub-atomic particles — principally the nucleon and two graviton-like particles he calls the G1 and G2. Rather than treating the fundamental forces as fields, the model builds gravity, light, electricity and matter from the mechanical interaction of these particles.

Beginning in 2006, de Hilster set out to detect gravity as a particle and to reformulate it as a pushing force in the tradition of Le Sage. In his account, streams of gravitons continually pass through matter, and the shadowing of these streams between two bodies produces what is conventionally interpreted as gravitational attraction. From this idea he derived his own equation for gravity — a "cloud of forces" that sums the gravitons entering, exiting and striking a body using the actual geometry and mass of the objects involved, rather than the idealized point masses of the Newtonian equation. Because it works from real geometry, the equation can be used to simulate almost any physical setup.

De Hilster has applied this gravity equation to a range of problems that mainstream physics treats separately, arguing that it can address orbital anomalies, planetary rotation, and phenomena otherwise attributed to dark matter — and he has more recently extended the same basic ideas into circuit theory, suggesting they may apply to other areas of physics as well.

Wave–Particle Duality

In 2015, while trying to describe light waves in terms of particles, Robert de Hilster proposed a possible solution to the wave–particle duality. He suggested that light is made of waves of particles travelling together at the speed of light — like successive waves of bombers — which accounts not only for a frequency but for the intensity of a light wave. This became one of the four universal motions in physics described by Robert and his son David, first presented in their book Principia Mathematica 2.

Films

Robert is one of the central characters in the documentary film Einstein Wrong - The Miracle Year, directed by his son David de Hilster, which premiered at the Art Theatre in Long Beach, California in December 2013. The film follows David's mother on a journey to meet scientists working outside the mainstream who question Einstein's physics.

The father-and-son scientific collaboration, and the Particle Model itself, are also the subject of a later documentary by filmmaker Javier Perez built around their book The Four Universal Motions in Physics.

The Particle Guru

In late 2017, at the age of 80, Bob started a YouTube channel, The Particle Guru, where he makes videos explaining various aspects of the Particle Model through hands-on demonstrations with magnets, light and electronic circuits. His later work has included calculations carried to 150 decimal places and computer simulations running over several days.

Personal

Bob is widowed (he was married to Patricia de Hilster) and has four children — David, Karan, Laurie, and Michael — along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is retired and lives and works in Boca Raton, Florida, near his eldest son, David.
