Stephen J. Puetz is an American cycle analyst and statistician, Senior Research Scientist at the Progressive Science Institute, and the discoverer of what he calls the Universal Wave Series — a harmonic series of cycles claimed to run through geological, biological, astronomical and financial records alike.

Puetz's distinguishing claim is quantitative and unusually specific: that the cycles found across these very different domains are not independent but period-tripled, each successive cycle three times the length of the last, so that a single equation with 32 terms covers periods from 57.3 years to 1.64 billion years. He argues that a harmonic relationship of this kind across unrelated fields implies a common physical source.

He is the co-author, with Glenn Borchardt, of Universal Cycle Theory: Neomechanics of the Hierarchically Infinite Universe (2011) and of the Neomechanical Gravitation Theory (2012), in which the universal cycles are attributed to variations in aether density produced by compression waves.

Unusually among researchers documented on this wiki, Puetz has taken this work into the mainstream peer-reviewed literature, publishing period-tripling analyses in Chaos, Solitons & Fractals and Mathematical Geosciences.

Background

Puetz came to the subject from financial markets rather than from academia. Working as a market analyst, he became interested in cyclic analysis and began looking for a plausible physical explanation of cyclic behaviour in market data. As his database grew he found that the cycles he was tracking — financial and sociological — appeared to correlate with cycles documented in quite separate fields, including gravitational, geomagnetic and geophysical records. The Unified Cycle Theory grew out of that observation.

The Unified Cycle Theory

Puetz announced the result in The Unified Cycle Theory: How Cycles Dominate the Structure of the Universe and Influence Life on Earth (2009). The book classifies major cycles documented by scientists in astrophysics, geology, climatology and biology, with frequencies spanning from less than a month to hundreds, thousands and millions of years, and argues that they form a single ordered set rather than a collection of unrelated periodicities.

The central structural claim is period-tripling: the cycles oscillate in multiples of three, cascading into a period-tripled series. Puetz presented one equation combining the characteristics of 32 theoretical cycles running from 57.3 years to 1.64 billion years. Statistical testing reported that the astronomical and geological cycles are phase-locked synchronously, while the biological cycles lag — a pattern he reads as indicating a common astronomical cause driving the geological and biological records alike.

He argued that observations of this kind carry implications for cosmology: an infinite, hierarchically structured universe accommodates a scale-free harmonic series far more naturally than a finite one of definite age.

This record is worth noting in context. The cycle analysis stands or falls on statistical grounds that can be assessed independently of the cosmology Puetz and Borchardt draw from it, and it has been assessed on those grounds in the ordinary literature — which is why Puetz occupies an unusual position between the two communities.

Universal Cycle Theory (2011)

With Glenn Borchardt, Puetz wrote Universal Cycle Theory: Neomechanics of the Hierarchically Infinite Universe (Outskirts Press, 2011), the first book to interpret current physical and cosmological data through Borchardt's Ten Assumptions of Science. The division of labour is set out in the title: cycles explain the motions in the universe, infinity explains its hierarchical structure, and neomechanics supplies the physical laws.

Two motions do most of the work in the model — vortices, which rotate matter and produce circular cycles, and waves, which compress and decompress matter and produce linear cycles. The universal cycles Puetz identified statistically are attributed to variations in aether density produced by compression waves.

Neomechanical Gravitation Theory (2012)

The same collaboration produced the Neomechanical Gravitation Theory, in which gravitation is a push arising from a gravitational pressure gradient in the aether: baryonic matter displaces free aether particles and absorbs their motion, so aether pressure is lowest where matter is densest and greatest in intergalactic space. Satellites remain in orbit because distal aether pressure exceeds proximal aether pressure. The theory also predicts that the velocity of light is a function of aether density.

Because the model is built on the univironmental principle that what happens to any portion of the universe depends equally on the matter in motion inside and outside it, gravitation in it is universal but strictly local — which the authors present as avoiding the non-local difficulties of Le Sage's version of push gravity.
