Otto Brühlmann (born 1883) was a Swiss civil engineer and philosophical writer who developed a critique of Albert Einstein's theory of relativity centred on the nature and significance of light.
Biography
Brühlmann studied at the Polytechnikum in Zürich (now ETH Zurich), where he obtained a diploma as a civil engineer in 1906. He worked in that profession in Switzerland, Argentina, the Balkans and East Africa. From 1921 onward he devoted himself primarily to philosophical questions.
Work
From 1922 Brühlmann set out ideas concerning the role of light in physics, arguing that the electromagnetic process which physics treats as light is not light itself, and drawing from this a critique of Einstein's assumptions about space and time. He pursued this theme across a series of books linking physics, metaphysics and the philosophy of knowledge, among them Ein Weg zum Ganzen (Basel, 1947).
