Hans van Leunen (10 June 1941 – 16 June 2023) was a Dutch physicist, chemist and software engineer, known for developing the Hilbert Book Model, a personal, purely mathematical model of the foundations of physical reality. He published extensively under the name J.A.J. van Leunen and worked for most of his career as a researcher at Philips.
Biography
Van Leunen was born on 10 June 1941 in Helmond, Netherlands. He first trained in chemistry at the Eindhoven HTS (higher technical school) between 1957 and 1960, and later studied applied physics at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), completing his degree in 1970.
After his military service, he began a long career in the high-tech industry with Philips. He joined Philips Elcoma EOD, where he worked on the development of image intensifier tubes; this activity later became part of the Philips Medical Systems division. In 1987 he moved to an internal Philips software house, and in 1995 he joined the company's Semiconductor division, where he designed modular software generation systems. From 1983 to 2006 he also ran his own software company, Technische en Wetenschappelijke Programmatuur (TWP). He retired in 2001 and lived in Asten, Netherlands.
He died on 16 June 2023.
Work
Van Leunen is best known for the Hilbert Book Model, a personal research project that he launched in 2009 and renamed to its current title in 2011. He described it as an unorthodox, purely mathematical model that investigates the foundations and the lower levels of the structure of physical reality, based on the conviction that physical reality possesses its own kind of mathematics.
The model is built on the framework of traditional quantum logic and its relation to separable Hilbert spaces, and it seeks to derive equations of motion for elementary particles from these mathematical foundations. Within the model, van Leunen argued that a Euclidean quaternionic structure and a Minkowski spacetime structure appear in parallel in physical reality. He published his work primarily through open preprint archives, personal websites and the collaborative platform Wikiversity, rather than through peer-reviewed journals.
