Franco Selleri received his Ph.D. cum laude from Bologna University in 1958, and has been a fellow of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare since 1959. He is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and the Fondation Louis de Broglie, and has served on the Board of Directors of the Italian Physical Society. He has had numerous visiting professorships and fellowships, including CERN, Saclay, Cornell and Dubna. He is the recipient of a medal from Gdanskie Towarzystwo Naukowe (Poland). He has published more than 200 papers in particle physics, quantum theory, relativity and history and philosophy of physics. He is the author of numerous books and editor of numerous conference proceedings on topics relating to the foundations of physics. He recently (2009) accepted to be Director of&nbsp;ECE Science Technology Ltd, of Steriwave Plc, and of Yellow Energy Plc.

He spent the bulk of his academic career at the University of Bari, where he was professor of physics and later professor emeritus.
 
He held numerous visiting professorships and fellowships, including at CERN, Saclay, the University of Nebraska&ndash;Lincoln, Cornell University and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research at Dubna. He was a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and of the Fondation Louis de Broglie, and served on the Board of Directors of the Italian Physical Society. He was the recipient of a medal from the Gdanskie Towarzystwo Naukowe (Gdansk Scientific Society, Poland).
 
Selleri published more than 200 papers in particle physics, quantum theory, relativity, and the history and philosophy of physics, and authored or edited a long list of books and conference proceedings on the foundations of physics. Consider a platform of radius <math>R</math> rotating with angular velocity <math>\omega</math>. Light sent around the rim in the two opposite directions takes different times, as measured by a single clock on the rim: this is the Sagnac effect, and it implies a rim-frame light-speed anisotropy. Now take the limit <math>\omega \to 0</math> and <math>R \to \infty</math> while holding the peripheral velocity <math>v = \omega R</math> fixed. The acceleration <math>\omega^2 R</math> tends to zero and the rim becomes locally indistinguishable from a straight inertial frame moving at <math>v</math> &mdash; yet the ratio of the two global light speeds does '''not''' tend to 1. Selleri argued that special relativity, which asserts light-speed isotropy in every inertial frame, therefore contains a genuine discontinuity at zero acceleration, whereas the <math>e_1 = 0</math> inertial transformations give a smooth, continuous limit that matches the rotating case exactly. The claimed payoff is the elimination of the paradoxes of the standard theory &mdash; the clock (twin) paradox, the causal paradoxes generated by superluminal signalling, and the rotating-disc/Ehrenfest difficulties &mdash; while leaving every confirmed relativistic prediction, from time dilation and relativistic beaming to Thomas precession, intact. He argued in ''"[[Superluminal Signals Imply Absolute Simultaneity]]"'' that if superluminal propagation exists at all (as some quantum-tunnelling and EPR-correlation experiments have been read to suggest) then only absolute simultaneity keeps causality safe.

Selleri's earlier work was in particle physics and then, from the 1960s onward, in the foundations of quantum mechanics, where he was one of the small group of physicists who kept the interpretation question alive when it was professionally unfashionable. He was a realist: he held that quantum objects exist independently of observation and that the Copenhagen renunciation of a description of microphysical reality was a philosophical, not an empirical, commitment. His ''Die Debatte um die Quantentheorie'' (1983) and its Spanish edition became widely read statements of this view.
 
Technically, Selleri worked on '''Bell's inequalities''' and the '''Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen''' problem. He derived strengthened forms of the inequalities, analysed carefully what the atomic-cascade experiments (Aspect and others) actually establish once detection efficiency and other auxiliary assumptions are taken into account, and argued that the experiments then available did not conclusively refute local realism &mdash; the "detection loophole" line of criticism. Franco Selleri received his Ph.D. cum laude from Bologna University in 1958, and has been a fellow of the Istituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare since 1959. He is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences and the Fondation Louis de Broglie, and has served on the Board of Directors of the Italian Physical Society. He has had numerous visiting professorships and fellowships, including CERN, Saclay, Cornell and Dubna. He is the recipient of a medal from Gdanskie Towarzystwo Naukowe (Poland). He has published more than 200 papers in particle physics, quantum theory, relativity and history and philosophy of physics. He is the author of numerous books and editor of numerous conference proceedings on topics relating to the foundations of physics. He recently (2009) accepted to be Director of ECE Science Technology Ltd, of Steriwave Plc, and of Yellow Energy Plc.
