Thomas Pryor Burwell (born May 5, 1985) is an American mathematics educator and writer based in Greensboro, North Carolina. He writes on the philosophy of science, the history of science, and computational mathematics, and has contributed as a blogger to the website of the Natural Philosophy Alliance.
Biography
Burwell studied at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and completed a degree in secondary education and teaching at North Carolina A&T State University. He served as a student teacher at High Point Central High School and subsequently worked as a mathematics teacher in the Guilford County Schools. Alongside his teaching, he has developed original mathematics curriculum materials.
Work
Since 2015, Burwell has maintained a blog hosted on the Natural Philosophy Alliance website, writing on the history and teaching of mathematics and physics. His posts address the relationship between modern science and the older tradition of natural philosophy, including a discussion titled "Post-Modern Science vs. Scientific Natural Philosophy," in which he contrasts contemporary scientific method with the natural-philosophical approach he traces to the Scientific Revolution of sixteenth-century Europe. From 2016 he also wrote for the mathematics website numberflow.org. His stated interests span the philosophy of science, the history of science, and computational mathematics.
