Renato Iraldi Senacheribel (born 24 July 1942) is an Italian-born Venezuelan physicist and academic. He spent his career at the Universidad Central de Venezuela (UCV) in Caracas, where he taught and carried out research in solid-state physics, and where he served as a full professor until his retirement in 1993.

Biography

Iraldi was born in Asti, Italy, on 24 July 1942, and later became a Venezuelan citizen. He completed his undergraduate studies at the Universidad Central de Venezuela, earning the degree of Licenciado en Física in 1967. He pursued graduate work in France at the Université Scientifique et Médicale de Grenoble, obtaining a Diplôme d'Études Approfondies (D.E.A.) in solid-state physics in 1972 and a Doctorat de troisième cycle in 1974, the latter awarded with the distinction très honorable.

Iraldi joined the Faculty of Sciences of the UCV as an instructor in 1967 and advanced through the academic ranks, becoming assistant professor in 1971, associate professor (Profesor Agregado) in 1975, and professor (Asociado) in 1979. Between 1971 and 1974 he held a fellowship from the university's Council for Scientific and Humanistic Development, and in 1980 he spent a sabbatical year at the Laboratoire de Métallurgie associated with the C.N.R.S. in Nancy, France. From 1981 to 1984 he directed the School of Physics and Mathematics of the Faculty of Sciences. He was promoted to full professor (Titular) in 1987 and became a professor emeritus (Profesor Jubilado) in 1993.

Work

Iraldi's research was principally in solid-state and condensed-matter physics, with an emphasis on Mössbauer spectroscopy and the magnetic properties of metals and alloys. His published and conference work addressed topics including hyperfine magnetic and electrostatic interactions in iron–nickel alloys, crystal-field parameters and magnetic behaviour in rare-earth compounds, amorphous iron–silicon–boron alloys, and the characterization of iron-bearing catalysts used in the processing of heavy petroleum. He also produced work on the foundations of quantum mechanics, including studies of quantum mechanics in phase space and of Segal's postulates.

Beyond his technical research, Iraldi maintained a personal academic website hosting expository writing on physics and the history of science, covering subjects such as mechanics, electromagnetism, thermodynamics, energy and global warming, as well as material in the humanities.
