Leslie C. Case (September 11, 1930 – July 15, 2010) was an American chemical engineer, inventor, and independent researcher who, in the later part of his career, became known within the Cold Fusion community for a gas-phase process he called "catalytic fusion."
Biography
Case was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on September 11, 1930. He was educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he earned several degrees, including a Doctorate of Science. He spent his career as a chemical engineer and inventor, holding patents in the field of polymer chemistry; his work on polyether polyols was the subject of the reported patent-office case Case v. CPC International, Inc. (U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, 1984). Case had a broad range of interests over his life, including gemstone cutting, the recovery of shale oil, the growing of grapes and production of wine in Australia, and alternative energy. He died at his home in Newfields, New Hampshire, on July 15, 2010, at the age of 79.
Work
In his later years Case turned to low-energy nuclear reaction research, which he preferred to describe as "catalytic fusion" rather than "cold fusion." His approach used a sealed container holding a precious-metal catalyst supported on activated carbon together with deuterium gas. In demonstrations he loaded activated carbon, including coconut-shell carbon, with roughly 0.1 to 0.5 percent by weight of a precious metal, reporting that palladium at about 0.4 percent worked best. When the sealed cell was pressurized with deuterium (on the order of a few atmospheres) and heated to roughly 200 °C, Case reported excess heat and the accumulation of helium-4, which he interpreted as a signature of deuterium-deuterium fusion.
Case described the process publicly at the Seventh International Conference on Cold Fusion (ICCF-7) in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1998, and conducted a demonstration at the laboratory of Cold Fusion Technology in Bow, New Hampshire, on April 30, 1998. His claims drew attention within the field, and follow-up analyses were undertaken by other researchers: samples examined at Lockheed Martin Energy Systems in Oak Ridge reported helium at background levels and evidence of air contamination, while Michael McKubre at the Stanford Research Institute (SRI International) carried out replication experiments and mass-spectrometry measurements of helium production. Case's results and the questions surrounding them were discussed in the cold fusion literature, including Infinite Energy magazine.
