Steven L. Coleman (also known as Steve Coleman) is an American analyst and engineer based in Laurel, Maryland, known for his work on a proposed Thermodynamic Unification Theory. He is an independent researcher in Cosmology, Gravitation, Special Relativity and Quantum Physics whose work seeks to describe physical phenomena such as entanglement, superposition, wave–particle duality and gravitation as thermodynamic processes within a single framework.

Biography

Coleman lives in Laurel, Maryland, United States, and works as an analyst and engineer. He conducts independent research in theoretical physics outside of the mainstream academic and peer-review system, publishing his work as preprints.

Scientific contributions

Coleman has proposed what he calls a Thermodynamic Unification Theory, an attempt to provide a physical description of natural phenomena within a single self-consistent framework of structures, laws and processes. In this approach he treats concepts such as entanglement, superposition, wave–particle duality and gravitation as physical, thermodynamic processes rather than as separate or purely mathematical constructs.

In December 2014 Coleman published the first paper in this program, On the Thermodynamics of General Relativity, as a preprint on the viXra e-print archive. The paper argues that General Relativity is incomplete as a physical theory of gravitation because of the first law of thermodynamics, and it offers a modification of General Relativity based on thermodynamic first principles. Coleman contends that this framework makes General Relativity interdependent with both Quantum Mechanics and Special Relativity, and that it can account for cosmological observations that had previously been attributed to Dark Matter and Dark Energy without introducing new particles or new physics. In his framework, viewing the photon as a thermodynamic process is presented as making gravitation an emergent property of spacetime.

This paper describes a theory of gravitation which is presented as thermodynamically consistent with observational evidence, so that neither Dark Matter nor Dark Energy is required. By viewing the photon as a thermodynamic process, gravitation is treated as an emergent property of spacetime without introducing new particles or requiring new physics. The work is based on the first principles of thermodynamics.
