I became a Licentiate of the Royal Institute of Chemistry in 1969, and did several years of industrial research, particularly into the vacuum deposition of high molecular weight polymers. As the UK's industrial base had started shrinking at that time, my employers, BISRA (British Iron and Steel Research Association) was wrapped up.
