C. Don Briddell (born 1944) is an American sculptor, industrial designer, and independent theorist. Professionally he is known as a wildfowl carver and sculptor, but he is best known in alternative-science circles as the originator of Field Structure Theory (FST), a self-developed structural interpretation of physics that models particles, fields, mass, and energy as configurations of loops, twists, and knots. He is the founder and director of the Field Structure Institute in Mt. Airy, Maryland.
Biography
Early life and education
Briddell was born in 1944 in Crisfield, Maryland, on the Eastern Shore, where he grew up and learned wildfowl carving and painting under the informal instruction of the noted decoy makers Lem and Steve Ward. He became interested in science as a child and read widely in physics throughout his life.
He studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, earning a degree in industrial design in 1966. There he studied form and structure theory under Professor William Katavolos and made an independent study of the work of Buckminster Fuller and Kenneth Snelson. His senior thesis was titled "Form and Structure Theory." He was accepted into a master's program at the Illinois Institute of Technology but instead entered the United States Peace Corps, serving as a small-industry and arts-and-crafts developer in Ecuador from 1966 to 1969. In 1970 he studied at the Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy at the Sivananda Ashram, Rishikesh, India, receiving an Acharya degree.
Career
Briddell worked in South Africa in the early 1970s developing portable architecture, and in 1972 received an industrial design award from the Industrial Designers Association of South Africa. He returned to the United States in 1973 and settled permanently in Mt. Airy, Maryland. Since 1975 he has made his living principally in the arts, property, and finance, while pursuing physics privately as a citizen scientist. His wildfowl sculptures are held in collections including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, and he is also the author of the novel The Republic of Crisfield (2010).
Beginning in 2004, Briddell presented his structural ideas publicly, first to followers of Buckminster Fuller at a meeting of the Synergetics Collaborative in Washington, D.C. From 2005 onward he presented roughly twenty papers at conferences of the Natural Philosophy Alliance (NPA) and the Alternative Natural Philosophy Alliance (ANPA), among other venues, and published in their proceedings. In 2008 he gave a talk on the structure of particles according to Structural Skew Topology at an American Mathematical Society sectional meeting (abstract 1036-70-114).
Field Structure Theory
Field Structure Theory grew out of Briddell's college study of form and structure. He describes discovering a way to give three-dimensional forms (polyhedra) structural integrity through pure torsion, using elements he calls Structors, and a related family of three-dimensional knotted forms he calls fieldstructures (earlier "torsion structures"). From these he developed a geometric system he named Structural Skew Topology (SST), governed by a set of axioms intended to restrict allowable forms to those he considers found in nature.
The loop as sole building element
FST begins not with particles but with action, which Briddell defines as "loops of relatedness". His central structural claim is that the closed loop is the only viable building element: it is, he argues, the only form that can evolve structural complexity without introducing contrived devices such as fasteners. An open line of action — a string with two ends — he studied and found "incapable of structural potential", a direct rejection of the premise of string theory.
Reality is then built by varying three things only: the number of action loops involved, the number of twists in each loop, and their chiral orientation to one another. From a single unit and three variables he claims to generate a fractal continuum spanning action, energy and mass.
The plenum
FST is explicitly a background-dependent theory. Beneath physical reality lies a plenum — a matrix of chiral loops of action. Loops in perfect quiescence have no apparent energy; energy becomes an attribute of a loop only through interaction, taking the form of twisting and bending when loops interact in three dimensions. Interacting plenum loops produce radiant boson energy waves; from these evolve fermion structures, which occupy a local space of limited extent and possess a rest state — and a structure with limited spatial extension is what we call a mass particle.
Briddell's image for the relation between matter and field is that of a knot and a string: "the material world is not separate from the action matrix." The field, in his usage, is not a bookkeeping background on which matter and energy play, but a full participant in their affairs.
He notes that the electron and proton are the only particles whose mass has a stable rest state, and that they are consequently responsible for the longevity of the universe — adding, with characteristic relish, that "contrary to the decrees of the patent office, these two structures are perpetual motion machines par excellence."
The particle hierarchy and the Sierpinski scheme
On 31 December 1999 Briddell reports having found that three-dimensional loop fractal automata, structured according to a Sierpinski triangle hierarchy, generate the known mass values of particles to within a fraction of one percent. This result underlies his Particle Hierarchy Chart and the book-length treatment The Particle Hierarchy Paradigm (2021).
"The Neutron: Modeled as a Fieldstructure" (2011) is the most concrete application. The neutron appears as the seventh iteration of the fractal hierarchy and — contrary to the usual ordering — is formed from plenum field energy before the proton and electron, which arise when the neutron "deploys" its energy in the process ordinarily called decay. Briddell draws a testable consequence: at or near absolute zero the electron's kinetic energy on deployment would be low enough for the proton to capture it and form hydrogen, which "should be laboratory testable" — and which leads him to the striking inference that the core of the sun is at or near absolute zero.
Multiple Certainties
"Multiple Certainties" (2012) is Briddell's answer to quantum indeterminacy. His argument is that the Uncertainty Principle "is a conclusion determined by the method of analysis, i.e., by the mathematics" — an artifact of a reductionist approach rather than a fact about nature. Where physics studies an object in a field, FST studies form as the product of field force, starting from the whole and deriving the particular: what he calls the "something comes from everything" approach as against "something comes from nothing". With a discrete form and a deterministic set of axioms, he claims to find determinism at every structural platform of reality, from the smallest scale to the largest. A related analytic method in his writing is one he calls Tometry.
A caveat on testability
One feature of the work should be recorded plainly, because Briddell states it himself. In the neutron paper he writes that the mechanics of how loops are made to interact to produce particles "is proprietary": what is shown are "the beginning states and end-states, but not the transitional states of the chiral energy rings."
This is unusual and consequential. A theory whose generative mechanism is withheld cannot be independently reproduced, checked or refuted, and no reader can confirm that the claimed particle masses follow from the stated axioms rather than from adjustment after the fact. Whatever the merits of the structural picture, this restriction — rather than any particular physical claim — is the largest obstacle to the theory being assessed on its merits, and it is self-imposed.
Reception
Briddell's proposals lie outside mainstream physics and have been developed and published within the dissident-science community — some twenty papers to conferences of the Natural Philosophy Alliance and the Alternative Natural Philosophy Alliance (ANPA) from 2005 onward — rather than in peer-reviewed physics journals. He presents FST as an alternative to the Standard Model and quantum mechanics.
His background is genuinely unusual for this literature: he came to physics from design and sculpture rather than from engineering or academic science, by way of Katavolos, Buckminster Fuller and Kenneth Snelson, and his instincts are those of a structural artist asking what forms can hold together. That gives the work its distinctive character — the questions it asks first are about structural integrity, torsion and knotting rather than about equations — and it is why it has found readers in the Synergetics and design-science communities as readily as among physics dissidents.
