RUGGERO MARIA SANTILLI received the Italian equivalent of a Ph.D. in theoretical physics at the University of Turin, Italy, in 1966. The subsequent year he moved with his family to the U.S.A. where he remained ever since, by holding research, faculty or visiting positions at a number of academic institutions, including Harvard University, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology, The University of Miami, Florida, and others. Currently, he is the President of The Institute for Basic Research, a new, independent research institution in physics, mathematics and other basic sciences located within the compound of Harvard University. Santilli is also known for Il Grande Grido (1984, revised 2007), a book-length "ethical probe" of what he describes as the suppression of dissent from Einsteinian orthodoxy within the American physics establishment — a work that made him an early and outspoken voice for the concerns that animate the CNPS community.

Scientific contributions

The inverse problem and Birkhoffian mechanics

Santilli's earliest widely cited work, the two-volume Foundations of Theoretical Mechanics published by Springer-Verlag (1978, 1983), addressed the inverse problem of Newtonian mechanics: which equations of motion admit a Lagrangian or Hamiltonian representation, and what to do with the very large class that does not. Systems with contact, drag and other nonpotential forces fall outside the Hamiltonian framework, and Santilli's answer was a generalisation to Birkhoffian mechanics, built on the more general Birkhoff equations. This programme — take the standard formalism, identify its structural limitation, and construct the most general axiom-preserving generalisation — became the template for everything that followed.

Isomathematics and the Lie-Santilli isotheory

The central technical idea is the isotopic lifting of the associative product. Where conventional mathematics uses the product A × B with multiplicative unit 1, Santilli replaces it with the isoproduct A ⋆ B = A T̂ B, where T̂ is a positive-definite "isotopic element" that may depend on coordinates, velocities, densities, frequencies, wavefunctions and their derivatives. The unit is correspondingly lifted to the isounit Î = T̂⁻¹, which remains the correct left and right unit of the new product. Because the abstract axioms are preserved, Santilli calls the construction an isotopy — "same structure" — rather than a deformation.

Carrying this lifting through the whole of mathematics yields what Santilli calls isomathematics: isonumbers and isofields, isospaces and isogeometries, an isodifferential and isointegral calculus, and above all the isotopies of universal enveloping associative algebras, Lie algebras, Lie groups and their representation theory, collectively known as the Lie-Santilli isotheory. On Santilli's account the payoff is that T̂, being an arbitrary positive-definite function, can carry exactly the nonlinear, nonlocal-integral and nonpotential content that Lie's theory cannot — the mutual penetration of the hyperdense charge distributions of nucleons, for instance.

The scheme is then extended in stages of increasing generality:

  • Isomathematics — reversible-in-time systems, based on the isotopies of Lie's theory.
  • Genomathematics — irreversible systems, based on Albert's Lie-admissible algebras, with different ordered products for motion forward and backward in time.
  • Hypermathematics — multi-valued realisations of genomathematics, intended for biological structures.
  • Isoduals — anti-Hermitian conjugates of each of the above, introduced to describe antimatter.

Hadronic mechanics

Hadronic mechanics is the physical theory built on this mathematics. Santilli presents it not as a replacement for quantum mechanics but as a completion of it, in the sense of the Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen argument: quantum mechanics is recovered exactly whenever the isounit reduces to 1, which happens outside the range of the strong interactions (of the order of 10⁻¹³ cm). Inside that range, where wavepackets overlap and the interaction is no longer derivable from a potential, the isotopic formulation is claimed to apply. Applications developed by Santilli and collaborators include the structure of the neutron as a compressed hydrogen atom (following Rutherford's original conception), exact representations of nuclear magnetic moments and binding energies, the "etherino" hypothesis in place of the neutrino in the synthesis of neutrons from protons and electrons, and a proposed "controlled intermediate nuclear fusion" without harmful radiation.

Isodual theory of antimatter, the telescope with concave lenses, and isoredshift

Santilli holds that twentieth-century physics has no classical theory of neutral antimatter at all — charge conjugation being a purely operator-level map — and that the isodual formalism supplies one, mapping numbers, spaces and geometries into negative-definite images. From this he draws the prediction that antimatter light, which he terms isodual light, carries negative energy and exhibits a negative index of refraction when passing through a matter lens: it therefore diverges where ordinary light converges, and cannot be focused by the convex optics used since Galileo.

The practical consequence is the Santilli telescope, a refractive instrument built with concave lenses. Santilli reports that images obtained with such telescopes in Florida show dark, focused features absent from simultaneous convex-lens images of the same field, which he interprets as antimatter galaxies, antimatter cosmic rays and antimatter asteroids. Confirmatory studies have been published by collaborators associated with the Sorbonne and with the American Journal of Modern Physics, including reports of apparently "invisible terrestrial entities" recorded on the same instruments. These claims are not accepted in mainstream astronomy, and Santilli presents them as experimental predictions of isodual mathematics awaiting wider independent replication.

A related cosmological line of work is isoredshift. Santilli argues that light loses energy to a cold gaseous medium without scattering — an isotopic effect on the photon's frequency rather than a Doppler shift — and reports laboratory experiments in which light traversing a cold gas is redshifted and, through a hot gas, blueshifted ("isoblueshift"). On this basis he proposes that cosmological redshift need not imply expansion, and that the Big Bang, dark matter and dark energy may be unnecessary hypotheses. The same isominkowskian machinery is applied to the internal red- and blue-shifts of quasars and to their association with low-redshift galaxies, connecting his work to that of Halton Arp.

Magnecules and hadronic chemistry

In Foundations of Hadronic Chemistry (2001) Santilli proposed a new chemical species he calls magnecules: clusters of atoms, dimers (OH, CH) and ordinary molecules bonded not by valence but by the toroidal magnetic polarisation of atomic orbitals in an intense magnetic field. Magnecules are said to explain the anomalous energy content and mass spectra of gases produced by submerged electric arcs, and formed the technical basis of the MagneGas fuel process. Santilli likewise proposed an isochemical model of the molecular bond in which a correlated valence-electron pair (the "isoelectronium") accounts for the binding energies that standard quantum chemistry obtains only by variational approximation.

Anything the concave-lens instrument can see is therefore, on Santilli's account, invisible to conventional astronomy by construction.
