Richard O. Calkins is an American retired telecommunications executive, author, and independent critic of Albert Einstein's theories of relativity. Based in Sammamish, Washington, he worked in the telephone industry for more than 40 years before turning in retirement to writing, publishing, painting, and the study of physics and philosophy. He is the author of Relativity Revisited, Adages and Aphorisms from Philosophilus, and The Hidden Flaw in Relativity.

Biography

Calkins spent more than four decades in the telephone industry, with a career that spanned engineering, marketing, finance, regulatory affairs, and legislative policy development. He began as a transmission engineer and later served as Engineering Manager for network planning at Pacific Northwest Bell in Seattle, Washington, where his responsibilities included transmission engineering, long-range planning, network planning, and systems analysis and programming.

At GTE, Calkins held responsibilities in regulatory affairs and marketing. He served as department head for regulation at the General Telephone Company of the Southwest and, at GTE Telops headquarters, as Assistant Vice President for product planning and pricing in the marketing department and as Assistant Vice President for regulatory strategy in the regulatory affairs department. After retiring from GTE, he served as Vice President for telephone industry policy development at the United States Telephone Association in Washington, D.C.

Following his retirement from the telephone industry, Calkins devoted himself to physics, philosophy, writing, publishing, and water-media painting. He founded Calkins Publishing Company, LLC, through which he has issued his books, several of which he has also illustrated. He is married and has two daughters.

Scientific contributions

Outside the scientific mainstream, Calkins is a critic of both the special and general theories of relativity. After more than two decades of study, he argues that Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity contains what he describes as an irreparable logical flaw, contending in his abstracts and books that the theory rests on circular reasoning. He also questions the concept of quantized energy and the photon model of light, and has proposed that light acquires the velocity of its source. In related work he argues that the physical mediums for the propagation of light are, in his words, "hiding in plain sight," and he has outlined experiments intended to test whether light acquires the velocity of its source using current technology. These positions place his work in opposition to the standard interpretations of modern physics.
