	The Spiral Field Theory, set out in the late 1990s papers and in ''Unified Spiral Field and Matter'' (1999), rests on two claims. The first is a set of novel relativistic relationships on which both the gravitational mass and the electric charge of a particle ''decrease'' with increasing velocity, falling to zero at the limiting speed of light — the reverse of the usual relativistic mass increase. The second is that the structure of everything in nature is spiral: elementary particles are built from toroidal spiral fields and electromagnetic waves from helical spiral fields, with mass and electric charge determined by the degree and direction of the field's vorticity and by its geometry rather than being primitive properties.

	Spiral fields, in this scheme, exist only at discrete energy levels and transform into one another as those levels change. At the lowest, zero energy level the toroidal spiral field degenerates into a spherical field, and the ensemble of these forms a zero-point-energy aether which Ginzburg names the '''dynosphere'''. The dynosphere does three jobs at once: excited, it creates both outer toroidal fields (matter) and inner toroidal fields of opposite vorticity (antimatter); it is the medium in which electromagnetic waves propagate; and it supplies a dynamic velocity frame of reference for moving bodies. Ginzburg argues that unifying field, matter and aether in this way removes the infinities that plague point-particle physics, and he offers reinterpretations of the hydrogen spectrum, of the energy required to accelerate electrons, and of the galactic red shift. His 1997 paper on the structure of atoms and fields applies the same relativistic relationships to build an atomic model from muons, positrons and electrons, deriving fractional charges of 1/3 and 2/3 from the velocity dependence and quantisation of charge, and giving a new reading of Maxwell's displacement current.

	~~===The torus and helix as prime elements===~~

	From 2004 Ginzburg recast the theory in terms of two "prime elements of nature", the relativistic torus and the relativistic helix. Each is a spiral string element containing a single-wave leading double string wound about by a trailing double string that travels its spiral path at the speed of light. In the torus the leading string follows a circle and the trailing string a toroidal path; in the helix both follow helical paths. Because these objects can absorb and release energy, they can sustain themselves, and Ginzburg holds them to be the natural constituents of elementary particles (torus) and photons (helix). This is where his work touches the wider [[Toroidal Ring\|toroidal ring]] tradition of modelling the electron as a circulating structure rather than a point.

	~~===Toryces, helyces and the origin of the universe===~~

	The mature version of the prime elements is the '''toryx''' and its offspring the '''helyx''' — spacetime entities rather than fields in a medium. Ginzburg presents the creation of the universe as the polarization of Nothingness, governed by a conservation law for Nothingness and constrained by the uncertainty principle. Toryces are polarized in two independent ways: by charge, through the ability of their leading and trailing strings to be in opposite inversion states (the toryx can, in effect, be turned inside out), and by energy, since their total kinetic and potential energy may be negative or positive, making them able either to absorb or to release energy. The components of the trailing string's velocity may be subluminal or superluminal, real or imaginary.

	Toryces occupy discrete excitation and oscillation quantum states, and matched polarized toryces unify to form elementary matter particles that Ginzburg calls '''trons''': a-trons, the lightest and most rigid, which constitute the aether; e-trons, which form electrons and positrons; and z-trons, the heaviest, which form the cores of nucleons and the singularity. Helyces are produced when a parent toryx drops from a higher to a lower quantum energy state; combining, they yield the radiation particles — photons and neutrinos — that carry energy and, in Ginzburg's phrase, communication between matter particles. Depending on the parent toryx, helyces may propagate at luminal or superluminal velocities, and the interplay of subluminal and superluminal string speeds is what he says keeps both matter and radiation particles in existence.

	~~===3-Dimensional Spiral String Theory===~~

	The 3-Dimensional Spiral String Theory, presented from 2009, is Ginzburg's unified theory of the universe and is offered explicitly as an alternative to the Standard Model and to conventional string theory. He sets it three goals: to describe the unified structure of the prime elements of the whole universe, including ordinary matter, dark matter and black holes; to demonstrate the possibility of radiation propagating at superluminal velocity; and to uncover the unified nature of the strong, superstrong (colour), gravitational and electric forces. Unification of specially matched polarized toryces produces four prime elementary particles — electrons, positrons, aetherons and higgstrons — which in turn constitute the quantum vacuum, the aether and composite particles including nucleons. Ginzburg emphasises that, unlike string theories requiring ten or more dimensions, his is three-dimensional plus time, and therefore in principle testable by three-dimensional experiment. He also holds that the theory demands a new interpretation of zero, of the number line and of trigonometry.

Rather than positing an undiscovered exotic substance filling the galaxies, Ginzburg treats dark matter and dark energy as further metamorphoses of polarized spacetime — states of the same prime elements that constitute ordinary matter, differing in polarization and energy state rather than in kind. On this view the dark sector is not missing matter but unrecognised structure in the aether-spacetime the theory already requires, and the aetheron-type prime particles that make up the aether are precisely what the mainstream is looking for under another name. Vladimir B. Ginzburg was born in Moscow, Russia. He received an M.S. degree in mechanical engineering (1961) and a Ph.D. degree in technical sciences (1968). He moved to the United States with his family in 1974 where his principal occupation was the development of computer models for simulation of technological processes. This work led to the publication of two books: ''Steel Rolling Technology'' (1989) and ''High-Quality Steel Rolling'' (1993). The author of numerous articles related to engineering, Vladimir Ginzburg holds over 60 U.S. and foreign patents.  In parallel with his work in engineering, he conducts intensive research in physics. The main topic of his research is the vortex theory. He presented the results of his research in several scientific papers and three books. In this book he outlines the history of the vortex theory along with the basic concept of the 3-dimensional spiral string theory (3D-SST) that explores several exciting aspects of nature.
