The model addresses the infinite speed of propagation paradox present in classical nonlinear acoustic models such as the Westervelt and Kuznetsov equations, and it has become the subject of extensive mathematical study and application, including in high-intensity ultrasound and acoustic nonlinearity parameter tomography. Jordan's studies of the so-called Jordan–Cattaneo waves examine analogues of compressible flow arising from relaxation-type constitutive laws.
