			After leaving the bench, Shaw turned to the study of physics, applying what he described as a lawyer's habit of weighing evidence and logic to fundamental scientific questions. He held that the phenomena of physics should have mechanical explanations, and he pursued a physical account of the cause of gravity.

			Shaw's central proposal is a "flowing aether" concept modelled on the form of aether that Maxwell set out in his 1865 treatise ''A Dynamical Theory of the Electromagnetic Field''. In this view space is filled with a sub-atomic substance, the aether, which flows into and is expelled from cosmic bodies. He treated inflowing and outflowing aether as two distinct states and argued that the inflow exerts a greater pushing force on atomic matter than the outflow, producing the effect observed as gravity; he used the analogy of a trout holding position in a flowing stream to illustrate the idea. His hometown's weather, in which mist condenses into rain and returns skyward, is said to have inspired the concept, which his colleague [[David de Hilster]] dubbed the "Vancouver Aether".
