Zareski proposes that the ether is an elastic medium described by point relative displacements governed by a Navier–Stokes–Durand equation together with continuity and divergence conditions. From this framework he argues that the classical fields, the constitution of particles, the electron spin, the &amp;quot;strong nuclear interaction&amp;quot; and quantum effects can all be derived, and that electromagnetism emerges as a property of the elastic medium. This revival of a mechanical ether stands outside mainstream twentieth-century physics, which discarded the luminiferous ether following special relativity.&lt;br /&gt;
