He works in the area of search-based software engineering, a field that applies metaheuristic search techniques such as genetic algorithms to problems in software engineering.

			In 2012, together with David Devine, Kelk authored the paper ''A Scienceographic Comparison of Physics Papers from the arXiv and viXra Archives''. The study examined a selection of physics papers drawn from the [[arXiv]] and [[viXra]] preprint repositories, applying "scienceography" (the study of the writing of science) to compare how the two communities write and present their work. The authors reported that mainstream and fringe scientific papers could be distinguished from one another by conventional text-classification methods.

			Kelk also has interests in physics and in role-playing games (RPGs).
