			Hardy was born on 15 April 1929 at the Te Kuiti Hospital annex in the King Country region of New Zealand. An only child raised on a dairy farm, he described his formal schooling as limited, interrupted by illness and by farm work; he nonetheless recalled excelling in agriculture, practical science and elementary geometry at secondary school. When his father was injured in an accident, Hardy left school to run the family farm.

			In 1946 he joined the Air Training Corps and was accepted into the Royal New Zealand Air Force, reporting to Wigram Air Force Base near Christchurch, but he was among a large portion of the intake released shortly afterward as servicemen returned from overseas following the Second World War. He later worked as a photographer, running his own photographic business, and as an engineer of milking machines and pumps. Among his engineering work, he designed a conversion kit giving a positive-displacement pump a variable flow rate, which was recorded in the patent journal.

			Hardy married Ann Compton on 7 February 1955 at the registry office in Tauranga, New Zealand; the couple later divorced.

			Hardy's central work is ''Genesis Continuous'', a cosmological model he first set out in 1973 and expanded in a more detailed 1995 edition. Rejecting the big bang, he argued that the universe is eternal and infinite, reasoning that an eternal universe permits [[conservation law\|conservation]] (with nowhere for matter or energy to be created from nothing or annihilated), ongoing creation, and continuous recreation through the recycling of energy and matter.

			Within this framework Hardy proposed a model of continuous planetary formation, in which planets form sequentially from solar activity and gradually spiral outward from the Sun, rather than forming together from a collapsing nebular disk.
