			Øverbye studied physics at the University of Oslo before completing a degree in medicine at the same institution, qualifying as a medical doctor in the 1970s. In his later career he operated his own laboratory and practice, combining patient care with independent research, before retiring from active clinical practice to focus on writing and a health-oriented blog.

			Øverbye's research centred on the biological effects of electromagnetism and on measurement-based methods drawn from the field he described as biophysics. He investigated bioelectricity and electromagnetism as means of diagnosing and treating illness, and studied the health effects of both natural and man-made radiation, including reported effects of exposure from mobile telephones. His monograph ''Bioresonance Research and Opportunity'' (2006) describes electro-acupuncture measurements aimed at evaluating whether a silica-crystal design could reduce the biological impact of cellphone exposure. He has also written and lectured on tick-borne illness, publishing on Lyme disease (borreliosis) under titles such as ''Syk etter flåttbitt'' ("Ill after a tick bite").

			A recurring theme in Øverbye's writing is the relationship between the psychology of science and what can actually be measured in practice.
