			Brandstater was born on February 23, 1929, into a pastor's family in Australia. He won a six-year scholarship to study medicine at the University of Adelaide, and afterward moved to London to pursue advanced training in anesthesia.

			In 1956, at the age of 28, he was appointed founding chairman of the newly established Department of Anesthesiology at the American University of Beirut (AUB) in Lebanon, a post he held until 1969. During his time in Beirut he pioneered techniques of prolonged intubation and mechanical respiration for newborns, work that helped establish early neonatal intensive care. He also introduced epidural analgesia for childbirth to the region, organized the first international congress of Middle East anesthesiologists in 1965, and founded ''The Middle East Journal of Anesthesiology'' in 1966.

			In 1969 he joined Loma Linda University in southern California, where he again served as chairman of a new Department of Anesthesiology. There he continued innovative clinical work, including the use of acupuncture alongside conventional methods to manage chronic pain at a pain-management clinic he established. He resided in Redlands, California.

			Brandstater died on January 17, 2020, at the age of 90, at Loma Linda University East Campus hospital following a brief illness. He was survived by his wife Beverly, four children, and seven grandchildren.

			Brandstater's professional career centered on anesthesiology, neonatal respiratory care, and pain management. Outside his medical field, he developed an interest in alternative approaches to physics and cosmology, and is associated on this wiki with the [[Electric Universe]] model, which proposes that electromagnetic forces play a larger role in cosmic structure than is assigned to them in conventional gravitational cosmology.
