==Abstract==

The exact mechanism of the Unity principle and the basic constituent of the physical Universe are disclosed with their consequences for theoretical physics. It is shown briefly how the Universe works at its micro and macro levels.

==Overview==

Peter Kohut's paper sets out a single-element ontology for physics. Everything that exists — matter, energy, space, the [[vacuum]], and every force field — is claimed to be built from one entity, the ''quantum dipole'': an indivisible bipolar connection between a "+" pole and a "&minus;" pole, in permanent oscillation through their mutual attraction and repulsion. Every positive pole is directly connected to every negative pole in the universe, so that the familiar philosophical slogan "everything is connected with everything else" is given, in Kohut's words, an "exact mechanism". Space is not a container in which dipoles sit; each dipole ''is'' a quantum of space, and the volume of the universe is simply the number of dipoles it contains.

The paper's departure from the mainstream account is total rather than local. Kohut rejects the [[Standard Model]]'s point-like particles as "quite naive", rejects [[Quark|quarks]] and gluons as inventions of convenience, rejects force-carrying virtual bosons as a "mechanical approach", and rejects both of Einstein's relativity theories as consequences of a false separation of matter from space. He accepts [[Time Dilation|time dilation]] as real but reattributes it to interaction with a physical vacuum; he denies [[Length Contraction|length contraction]] and the relativity of [[Simultaneity|simultaneity]] outright. The intellectual lineage is explicitly Hegelian: the paper presents itself as recovering dialectical rationalism from what it calls the positivist and axiomatic method that has, in its view, produced the present crisis in theoretical physics.

==The argument==

===Against the axiomatic method===

Kohut's opening move is methodological. Positivism, he argues, restricts knowledge to "the phenomenological level of reality" and reduces theory-building to the schema ''A'' &rArr; ''B'': if the axioms hold, the results hold, and experimental confirmation of ''B'' is taken to confirm ''A''. But "we can never be sure whether axiomatic theory is the only one, as the results ''B'' can also be derived from other theories with different initial axioms ''A''." [[Special Relativity]] is offered as the type case of a theory that is "mathematically consistent but unphysical", because it describes motion of coordinate systems relative to one another rather than motion of objects relative to a physical environment.

===Time dilation without relativity===

The paper accepts that clocks run slow, but insists the cause must be the same in both of Einstein's theories. In [[General Relativity]] time dilation is a function of gravitational potential, which Kohut reads as a function of vacuum density: higher potential means denser vacuum, hence more intense local pressure between a body and its surroundings, hence slower processes. He then demands the same physical cause for velocity-dependent dilation — "the reason for time dilation must be the same. It cannot be different in SRT (as a consequence of mutual symmetry of systems) in comparison with GRT (consequence of mutual asymmetry of systems)". The asymmetry is supplied by motion ''through'' the vacuum. Kohut's objection to symmetric dilation is the reciprocity paradox: two rockets approaching each other each judge the other's clock slow, which he says gives "impossible results at the moment of their mutual meeting."

===The quantum dipole===

The constructive part begins at what Kohut calls the highest level of abstraction. To say "something is" is empty until there is "something else" against which it defines itself; the two are not independent existences but anti-poles of one thing, and their relation must be dynamic. The simplest dynamic relation is simultaneous attraction and repulsion, manifesting as pulsation. This bipolar "one" is the quantum dipole (+/&minus;), and it is at once a part of the universe and a connection within it.

The unity theorem follows from a claim about parts and wholes: separating a part from the whole means separating it from every other part, which ''creates'' a connection to every other part. Since all connections are themselves parts, and all parts are networks of connections, every "+" pole is connected to every "&minus;" pole in the cosmos. The universe is therefore "a network of non-local connections" that "perceives all of its parts", and from this Kohut concludes that "the principle of universal simultaneity is valid. What is simultaneous in one system is automatically simultaneous in all others." Locality is a derived appearance: dipoles also act on their immediate neighbours through the repulsive pressure of their spaces, and it is this local mechanical action that makes the underlying non-local web invisible.

===Recovering Coulomb's law===

Dipoles are distinguished quantitatively by energy ''e''<sub>i</sub> and length ''d''<sub>i</sub>, related by a proposed universal constant

so that a dipole losing energy elongates and one gaining energy shortens. Attraction and repulsion are in equilibrium within each dipole, ''e''<sub>ia</sub> = ''e''<sub>ir</sub> = ''e''<sub>i</sub>/2, giving ''e''<sub>ia</sub> = &delta;<sub>t</sub>/2''d''<sub>i</sub>. Kohut identifies this with the classical potential energy of a pair of elementary charges, ''e''<sub>ia</sub> = (''q''<sup>2</sup>/4&pi;&epsilon;)/''d''<sub>i</sub>, which fixes &delta;<sub>t</sub> = ''q''<sup>2</sup>/2&pi;&epsilon;. Using the [[Fine Structure Constant|fine structure constant]] &alpha; = ''q''<sup>2</sup>/(2&epsilon;''hc'') this becomes

and with ''e''<sub>i</sub> = ''f''<sub>i</sub>''d''<sub>i</sub>, the attractive force is ''f''<sub>ia</sub> = &alpha;''hc''/(2&pi;''d''<sub>i</sub><sup>2</sup>) — an inverse-square law that Kohut presents as [[Coulomb's Law|Coulomb's law]] derived from the dipole relation rather than assumed.

===Charge, gravity and the unification of the forces===

Objects with an excess of positive poles are positively charged, those with an excess of negative poles negatively charged, and balanced objects neutral. Between two neutral objects containing ''k''<sub>1</sub> and ''k''<sub>2</sub> poles there are 2''k''<sub>1</sub>''k''<sub>2</sub> connections and hence a large attractive force ''f''<sub>a</sub> = (&alpha;''hc''/&pi;)''k''<sub>1</sub>''k''<sub>2</sub>/''d''<sup>2</sup>. This is normally cancelled by the outward spatial pressure of the dipoles emerging from each body, which is why neutral bodies show no electrostatic attraction. Kohut's asymmetry between the two Coulomb signs follows: electrostatic ''attraction'' is uncancelled non-local attraction between anti-poles, whereas electrostatic ''repulsion'' between like charges is the prevailing of local pressures where mutual connections are deficient. He offers the [[Casimir Effect|Casimir effect]] and the formation of Cooper pairs in [[Superconductivity|superconductors]] as evidence that neutral or like-charged objects can attract.

[[Gravity]] is then the small uncancelled residue of the same attraction, ''f''<sub>g</sub> = &beta;''f''<sub>a</sub>. The residue exists because part of the universe's repulsive force is consumed by cosmic expansion, so that the total gravitational force of the cosmos equals the total expansive force, ''G'' = ''F''<sub>e</sub>. Kohut treats this as a positive argument for expansion against other dissidents: "gravity as a counterbalance of cosmic expansion is just its direct evidence." Strong and weak nuclear forces differ from electromagnetism only in the shortness and energy of the dipoles involved, and [[Dark Matter|"dark matter"]] is identified with the energy stored in the long dipoles connecting celestial bodies — the cosmic vacuum itself. Whether a set of dipoles counts as "matter" or as "vacuum" is purely a question of length and point of view: within an atom, the dipoles binding nucleons and electrons ''are'' the atomic vacuum.

===Particle structures===

The paper assigns each particle an explicit pole count. A [[Photon|photon]] is a single dipole (+/&minus;) whose oscillation, seen from outside, is an electromagnetic wave — offered as "a consistent and factual explanation of the 'wave-particle' duality of light". Since a free quantum cannot resist being dragged by the expanding universe perpendicular to its oscillation, it has no rest mass and its speed ''is'' the speed of cosmic expansion; this is Kohut's account of why ''c'' has the value it does. An [[Electron|electron]] is (+/2&minus;), two dipoles; a [[Positron|positron]] (2+/&minus;); the [[Muon|muon]] and tau share the electron's structure but are shorter, more energetic and photon-excited, hence unstable. A [[Proton|proton]] is (3+/2&minus;) with six dipoles — and its three positive tops are offered as the real explanation of the three scattering centres found in electron–proton scattering, "not because of quark structure but bipolar essence of a proton."

A [[Neutron|neutron]] in its ground state is (3+/3&minus;) with nine dipoles: a proton structure plus one loosely bound negative pole. Excited by a photon it becomes (4+/4&minus;) with sixteen dipoles, which Kohut reads as a proton plus an electron plus their eight mutual connections — endorsing Rutherford's 1920 picture of the neutron as a bound proton–electron state. Beta decay is written ''n'' + &gamma; &rarr; ''p''<sup>+</sup> + ''e''<sup>&minus;</sup>, with no [[Neutrino|neutrino]]: Kohut does not deny neutrinos exist, but writes the standard product as "(&nu;<sub>e</sub>)?" and suggests a neutrino could only form where nuclear pressures inside heavy nuclei are strong enough to assemble four short energetic dipoles. Proton–antiproton annihilation proceeds through a protonium state (5+/5&minus;) releasing at least five photons; the deuteron is (6+/5&minus;) with 30 dipoles, and the alpha particle (12+/10&minus;) with 120.

===Cosmic dynamics===

The universe as a whole is itself a dipole, pulsating between expansion and contraction, and it is "a three-dimensional surface of a four-dimensional sphere" of volume ''V'' = 2&pi;<sup>2</sup>''r''<sup>3</sup>. Expansion proceeds by discrete quantum transitions in which a new pole pair is expelled; each transition is the elementary quantum of time. In symmetric state ''k'' there are ''k'' positive and ''k'' negative poles and ''k''<sup>2</sup> dipoles, so the transition from ''k'' to ''k''+1 adds 2''k''+1 dipoles. Since dipole count is volume and transition count is time, the basic quantum space-time equation is

which in continuous units becomes ''V'' = ''zt''<sup>2</sup>. Kohut notes that alternation between symmetric and asymmetric states in the earliest stages "could be the reason for prevalence of matter over [[Antimatter|antimatter]]", and identifies the dipole network with the unitary field Einstein sought.

===Against dark energy===

The paper's sharpest cosmological claim concerns the [[Supernova|supernova]] dimming that won the 2011 Nobel Prize. Kohut argues light does not approach us at constant ''c'': the point it left is itself receding at ''v'' = ''Hd'', so light closes on us at (''c'' &minus; ''Hd''). Distant sources therefore take longer and travel further than a constant-''c'' calculation implies, and so look fainter and more distant than expected — no [[Dark Energy|dark energy]] required. He adds that since ''c'' expresses the rate of cosmic expansion, a decelerating cosmos means a decelerating speed of light. He also rejects gravitons and [[Gravitational Waves|gravitational waves]], holding that gravity is instantaneous through the vacuum connections and that waves "never will be detected".

==Assessment==

What is genuinely attractive here is the ambition and the economy of the ontology. Kohut proposes one entity and one relation, and from them tries to obtain space, time, charge, all four interactions, particle spectra and cosmology. Few papers state their primitives so plainly or accept so openly the cost of doing so. The identification of vacuum with the long connections between bodies, rather than with an empty stage, is a coherent way of refusing the matter/space dualism he criticises, and it lets him treat the distinction between "particle" and "field" as one of dipole length rather than of kind. The insistence that time dilation should have one physical cause in both relativity theories is a fair demand to put to a unified account, and the observation that the Casimir force and Cooper pairing show attraction where naive charge counting predicts none is a real, if partial, point in his favour. The recognition, unusual among critics of the standard cosmology, that his own scheme ''requires'' cosmic expansion rather than permitting a static universe is intellectually honest — he argues against fellow dissidents on this point rather than with them.

The difficulties are severe and mostly concern the gap between assertion and derivation. The central relation ''e''<sub>i</sub>''d''<sub>i</sub> = &delta;<sub>t</sub> is postulated, not derived; Coulomb's law is then not obtained from the dipole model but ''matched'' to it by choosing &delta;<sub>t</sub> = ''q''<sup>2</sup>/2&pi;&epsilon; precisely so that the two expressions coincide. The subsequent appearance of &alpha;''hc''/&pi; is a rewriting of that identification in other constants, not a prediction of &alpha;. Gravity fares worse: the crucial factor &beta; that converts the enormous uncancelled electrostatic attraction into the gravitational force is introduced without value, derivation, or distance dependence, so the model produces no number for ''G'' and no explanation of why gravity is roughly 10<sup>36</sup> times weaker than the electric force between the same particles. The claim ''G'' = ''F''<sub>e</sub> equates quantities of different dimension and is never made quantitative. The particle structures are the paper's most concrete content, but they are diagrams with pole counts, not calculations: no mass, magnetic moment, lifetime, spin or decay rate is computed from them, so the fact that a proton has three positive tops explains the number of scattering centres only in the loosest sense and says nothing about the scaling behaviour, the momentum distributions, or the spin-1/2 character of the constituents that deep inelastic scattering actually measures. Assigning the electron two dipoles gives no route to [[Spin|spin]] 1/2 at all.

Several claims conflict directly with measurement. The denial of the neutrino in beta decay leaves the continuous beta spectrum and the missing energy and angular momentum unaccounted for; ''n'' &rarr; ''p'' + ''e'' alone cannot balance angular momentum for three spin-1/2 particles, and reactor antineutrinos have been detected in absorption since 1956. The denial of [[Gravitational Waves|gravitational waves]] — "which never will be detected" — was overtaken by the LIGO observation of GW150914 in 2015, and the earlier orbital decay of the Hulse–Taylor binary pulsar already matched the radiative prediction to fractions of a percent. Universal simultaneity, combined with instantaneous gravity, faces the standard constraint that instantaneous propagation in a system with aberration produces orbital instability far larger than observed. The dismissal of [[Length Contraction|length contraction]] as never verified experimentally sits awkwardly with muon survival at atmospheric depths and with the operating parameters of storage rings, and the claim that the relativity of simultaneity has never been tested is difficult to reconcile with the routine relativistic corrections applied in satellite timekeeping.

The alternative to dark energy also does not survive its own arithmetic. Writing the closing speed as (''c'' &minus; ''Hd'') mixes a local propagation speed with a recession speed defined at the source, and the resulting correction is first-order in ''Hd''/''c'' — it therefore modifies the whole Hubble diagram, including its low-redshift portion, where the linear relation is well established. It does not selectively dim only the distant supernovae, which is the effect requiring explanation. Kohut also asserts that a decelerating universe implies a decelerating ''c'', which would alter atomic spectra and hence the very redshifts he is interpreting, but this feedback is not worked through.

Finally, the paper's rhetoric works against it. Calling contemporary theory "monstrous", "irrational" and productive only of "darkness of scientific dogmatism", and asserting that new technologies are being blocked, converts a physical disagreement into a grievance and gives a reader little to test. The strongest form of Kohut's programme would set the rhetoric aside and compute one number that the standard account gets wrong — a mass, a coupling, a value of &beta; — rather than exhibiting structures that reproduce, qualitatively, what is already known.
