'''Stephan J. G. Gift''' is a Trinidadian electrical engineer and physicist, Professor Emeritus of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of the West Indies (UWI), St. Augustine, Trinidad and Tobago. Alongside a mainstream career in analog microelectronics and control systems, he is one of the most prolific and persistent published critics of Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity, arguing on the basis of Global Positioning System (GPS) data that the one-way speed of light is measurable, is not invariant, and that space-time is better described by the '''Selleri transformations''' — transformations that retain absolute simultaneity and a preferred frame — than by the Lorentz transformations.

==Biography==
Gift graduated from the University of the West Indies in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (First Class Honours), placing second in his graduating class. He completed an MPhil–PhD programme in optimal control systems in three years and received his PhD in Electrical Engineering (Control Systems) from UWI in 1980.

He lectured on and conducted research in electronic and control systems in the Department of Electrical Engineering at UWI from 1979 to 1983. He then moved into industry, founding and directing the Research and Development Centre at Telecommunications Services of Trinidad and Tobago Limited for twelve years (1983–1995). Design accomplishments there included a computer-based network monitoring system, a microprocessor-based system for circuit board repair, and an industry-grade microprocessor-based test system (the Subscriber Pair Identifier) for the verification of telephone records. The latter secured patents in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, improving cost, accuracy and process time by an order of magnitude or better; units were sold to the Barbados Telephone Company and the Bahamas Telephone Company.

He rejoined the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UWI in 1995 and established an electronics research programme there from 1996. He was promoted to the rank of Professor on 26 January 2005, and later served as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the St. Augustine Campus and as Pro Vice-Chancellor for Graduate Studies and Research. He retired in August 2021 after more than three decades of service, and the University conferred on him the title of Professor Emeritus. As emeritus professor he has continued to supervise graduate research and to write, including preparing a book for a general readership setting out his arguments against Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity.

He was an Honorary Research Fellow in the Department of Electrical Engineering at UWI from 1987 to 1989, during which time he investigated gravitational theory and, in 1988, presented a paper to the UWI Physics Department on what he argued was the invalidity of the General Theory of Relativity — work that led to the publication of a new theory of gravity in 2001.

Gift has published well over one hundred peer-reviewed articles. In engineering his best-cited work concerns all-pass filters in multiphase sinusoidal systems, precision full-wave rectifiers, current-mode instrumentation amplifiers and low-voltage CMOS current-feedback amplifiers, published in venues such as the ''IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement'', ''IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems'', ''Microelectronics Journal'' and the ''International Journal of Electronics''. He designed and published a versatile circuit he called the Operational Conveyor, developed a new pre-amplifier circuit for high-fidelity systems, and in 1983 discovered a new necessary condition in the calculus of variations, published in 1987.

==Scientific contributions==

===The one-way speed of light and the GPS===
Gift's central and most sustained argument is that the Global Positioning System provides a direct, working, and continuously verified measurement of the '''one-way''' speed of light — the quantity that special relativity holds to be unmeasurable without a convention-laden clock synchronization procedure. Because GPS satellite and ground clocks are synchronized to a common Earth-Centred Inertial (ECI) time, Gift argues that light signal travel times between separated clocks can be read off directly, without any Einstein synchronization convention being smuggled in.

From the GPS range measurement equation and the Sagnac correction routinely applied in GPS signal processing, he concludes that light propagating in the vicinity of the rotating Earth travels '''faster westward than eastward''' relative to the Earth's surface, with the difference being exactly what one expects if light moves at speed ''c'' in an underlying preferred (ECI) frame rather than at ''c'' in every frame. On this reading the light-speed invariance postulate of special relativity — Einstein's second postulate — is not merely unverified but is contradicted by the most successful navigation technology ever deployed. Gift has repeatedly described the GPS as a "gamechanger": an existing, continuously operating experiment whose engineering must, in his view, be taken as decisive experimental evidence.

He has extended the same line of reasoning to interplanetary spacecraft tracking technology, arguing that deep-space ranging likewise yields an anisotropic one-way light speed, and to a modified Michelson–Morley experiment carried out using GPS signals rather than an interferometer, in which he reports a successful detection of ether drift. Related papers argue that the observed relative motion of the Earth and the ether has in fact been detected, and that Doppler shift data reveal light speed variation.

===The Selleri transformations and absolute simultaneity===
The constructive half of Gift's programme is his advocacy of the space-time transformations of the Italian physicist Franco Selleri. Selleri showed that a family of "equivalent" transformations, differing only in their clock synchronization convention, can reproduce the standard relativistic predictions; the Lorentz transformations are one member of that family. Gift argues that the Selleri transformations stand outside and apart from that set: they alone preserve '''absolute simultaneity''' and space-time continuity, and they alone agree with the one-way light speed that is actually observed.

In a series of papers and in his book, Gift subjects the Lorentz and Selleri transformations to a battery of comparative tests — twelve in the fullest treatment. The first several are drawn from the GPS: clock operation, clock synchronization, and the range measurement equation. The remainder include relativity of simultaneity, the Sagnac effect, the Selleri paradox (the discontinuity in the speed of light on a rotating disc as its radius tends to infinity), the right-angle lever paradox, the 1925 Michelson–Gale experiment, the 2003 Wang experiment, and the Correspondence Principle. On Gift's accounting the Lorentz transformations fail these tests while the Selleri transformations pass them. He has also replied at length to Klaus Kassner's attempts to dissolve Selleri's paradox, and has worked out Thomas precession using the Selleri transformations to show that phenomena usually claimed as exclusively relativistic follow equally from a preferred-frame theory.

A companion strand of this work assesses '''Lorentz Ether Theory''' (LET) on the same footing, and Gift argues that once absolute simultaneity is admitted, low-speed physics is correctly described by the Galilean transformations while high-speed phenomena require the Selleri form — the Galilean transformations being adequate but not, in general, predictive at high speed.

===Gravitation and a quantum theory of magnetism===
Gift's dissent from Einstein extends to general relativity. After presenting a paper at UWI in 1988 arguing that the General Theory of Relativity is invalid, he developed and published in 2001 an alternative theory of gravity. As he presents it, the theory retains three centuries of Newtonian gravitation and effectively converts classical Newtonian gravity into a quantum theory, mediating the gravitational force by the exchange of spin-0 gravitons. He argues that it passes the classical tests — the perihelion shift of Mercury, the bending of light, and the Shapiro time delay — without curved space-time.

In related work on the fundamental forces he has proposed a unified treatment of spin-0 nuclear interactions and, in ''Progress in Physics'' (2009), a quantum theory of magnetism. Building on the premise that interactions need not satisfy Lorentz covariance, he develops a form of magnetism separate from the magnetism associated with the electromagnetic force, and applies it to superconductivity, arguing that it accounts for characteristics left unexplained by the Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer theory.
