Crothers describes beginning a part-time PhD at the University of New South Wales in March 2003 under Professor John K. Webb, initially on a simulation of extra-solar planets, and taking up general relativity as a sideline about a year later. Within months he had a result he held showed black holes inconsistent with general relativity. Webb was at first enthusiastic and arranged a lecture to his undergraduate class &mdash; having, Crothers notes, never previously encountered Schwarzschild's original solution.
