==Abstract==

Just as the Copernican Revolution replaced the anthropocentric Ptolemaic Cosmology with an objective and much simpler model of motion in this Cosmos, so we can replace observer-based Relativity with an objective and simpler theory of what is exists and what causes the motions and events and we observe. We must start by asking questions that have been long been suppressed: Relative to what in this Cosmos does light really move at velocity c? Relative to what in this Cosmos does matter have inertia? Does "empty" space itself have physical qualities or not? The author discusses these questions and presents an objective model of space and motion that explains the facts with greater simplicity than Relativity.

==Overview==

This is the second of Henry Lindner's papers on the philosophical foundations of modern physics, and the constructive half of the pair: the first diagnosed relativity and quantum theory as descendants of Berkeley's subjectivism, while this one proposes a replacement. Lindner's charge is that physics since 1905 has stopped asking what exists and settled for modelling what an observer measures. He puts the suppressed questions bluntly: "Relative to what in this Cosmos does light really move at velocity ''c''? Relative to what in this Cosmos does matter have inertia?"

His answer is '''flowing space''' — a physical [[Aether]] that streams radially into every mass at the local escape velocity, and that is dragged along, or ''entrained'', by the celestial bodies embedded in it. From this single postulate he derives the gravitational redshift, the Schwarzschild radius, the slowing of orbiting clocks, and an explanation of the null [[Michelson-Morley Experiment]] that needs no [[Length Contraction]]. The framing is explicitly historical: relativity is cast as a regression to Ptolemaic anthropocentrism, and etherism as the Copernican move still waiting to be made. The paper is unusual among aether papers in that it does not claim relativity's mathematics is wrong — it claims the mathematics is right and the interpretation is empty.

==The argument==

===Atomism or etherism===

Lindner insists the question admits only two answers, "either not-A or A." '''Atomism''' holds that space is nothing, a mere container, and all phenomena are particles flying through a void. '''Etherism''' holds that space has physical qualities and is therefore a substance, with particles as "persistent patterns of motion in and of space." He argues that modern physics is covertly ethereal already: strings, loops, quantum foam, negative-energy sea, zero-point energy, Higgs fields, [[Dark Energy]] and the "fabric" of space-time are all substances filling empty space, renamed to evade the taboo. The taboo itself he traces to theology — an eternal, omnipresent, self-evolving ethereal Cosmos competes directly with the God of traditional theism, a parallel he sets out explicitly in the paper's Table 1.

He is careful to say that he is not reviving Newton's single isotropic absolute space, which he calls "an abstract and inadequate theory." The historical sections credit [[Isaac Newton]] with positing a real physical space that resists acceleration, and fault him for an "action without a reaction" — space acts on matter but matter never acts on space. [[Ernst Mach]] gets credit for tying [[Inertia]] to the distribution of distant matter, but Lindner lists four objections: instantaneous action at a distance is unexplainable in a void; gravitational tug explains free fall but not resistance to forced acceleration; [[Mach's Principle]] implies inertia should vary with the proximity of matter, whereas "inertia appears to be the same near the Earth as it is in deep interplanetary and interstellar space"; and it says nothing about the fixed velocity of light.

The centrepiece of the historical case is [[Albert Einstein]]'s own 1920 Leyden lecture, quoted at length: "according to the general theory of relativity, space is endowed with physical qualities; in this sense, therefore, there exists an ether." Lindner reads this as a fatal admission — and then quotes the retraction that follows it, that this ether "may not be thought of as endowed with the quality characteristic of ponderable media... The idea of motion may not be applied to it" — which he glosses as "space is a substance but we must never think of it as a substance or theorize about it."

===The twin paradox as evidence for a third frame===

The empirical wedge is the twin problem. Lindner does not dispute the asymmetric ageing; he argues that the asymmetry itself refutes the Principle of Relativity. Since the twins' trajectories are symmetrical in each other's coordinate systems, "the only thing that can break this symmetry is a third, objective, ethereal frame in which one twin is actually moving faster than the other" — and that frame, he observes, is always in practice the non-rotating gravitational frame of the nearest celestial bodies. He rejects the standard appeal to felt acceleration on the ground that clocks are slowed by velocity, not acceleration, and points to the [[GPS]] satellites: their clocks are in uniform motion, feel no acceleration, and their slowing "correlates perfectly with their velocity in the non-rotating Earth CS." His conclusion is the paper's most striking single line: "Relativity has blinded us to the fact that atomic clocks do what Newton and Einstein said that we could not do — detect actual velocity in physical space."

===Flowing space===

The model itself is kinematic and brief. Reinterpreting the [[Equivalence Principle]] physically, Lindner proposes that "a frame is inertial if it is not accelerating relative to its surrounding inertial space." A surface observer is non-inertial because his surrounding space is accelerating past him; hence in a gravitational field the space itself accelerates inward at ''GM''/''r''<sup>2</sup>. Integrating, its velocity at radius ''r'' is the escape velocity

— 11.2 km/s at the Earth's surface. This yields the paper's central result. The confirmed gravitational clock formula Δν/ν = 1 − √(1 − 2''GM''/''rc''<sup>2</sup>) becomes, on substituting ''v''<sup>2</sup> = 2''GM''/''r'', exactly the transverse-Doppler formula Δν/ν = 1 − √(1 − ''v''<sup>2</sup>/''c''<sup>2</sup>). Gravitational and kinematic clock slowing are thus one effect: an atomic clock is "a space speedometer." Lindner names this the equivalence of gravitational and inertial velocity (EGIV), and combined with the acceleration equivalence, EGIAV. Setting the inflow velocity equal to ''c'' and solving gives ''r''<sub>c</sub> = 2''GM''/''c''<sup>2</sup>, the Schwarzschild radius, with no singularity, no wormholes and no four-dimensional space-time — only "a conglomeration of matter so massive and compact that light cannot propagate out through the space that is flowing inward." He credits Herbert Ives and Robert Kirkwood with mainstream-journal treatments of flowing space between 1939 and 1954, and Tom Martin with showing that a Galilean frame with inflow ''w'' = √(2''GM''/''r'') reproduces the Schwarzschild physical effects.

===Entrainment===

Entrainment does the work that length contraction does in Lorentz's theory. Because a mass is a space ''sink'', its surrounding flow field is swept along with it — the Earth drags its inflow into its 30 km/s orbital motion, the Solar System's field moves within the Milky Way's, and so on. This removes the ether wind and thus the Michelson–Morley null result, in the manner Stokes originally proposed, without requiring [[Length Contraction]] to be physically real. Crucially, rotation is ''not'' entrained, because a frictionless medium responds to pressure gradients but not to shear: hence the Coriolis effect, the Foucault pendulum, gyroscopic stability, the Michelson–Gale result and the east–west asymmetry in flown-clock rates. Light therefore moves at ''c'' ∓ ''v''<sub>rot</sub> for a surface observer, a 464 m/s equatorial drift he suggests was seen in the Brillet–Hall interferometer. Entrainment is also offered as the physical content of Mach's Principle, and — via partial entrainment of galactic space into rotation — as an alternative to [[Dark Matter]] in flat rotation curves, with net spatial ''outflow'' from stars and galaxies pushing them apart in place of dark energy.

===Predictions===

Lindner lists tests, and they are genuinely sharp. Light rising from the Earth should move at ''c'' − 11.2 km/s and falling light at ''c'' + 11.2 km/s relative to the surface. A vertically mounted interferometer should show a fringe shift from the 11.2 km/s vertical wind if length contraction is not physically real. Matter may be seen falling into a black hole faster than ''c'', or leaving a spatial source faster than ''c''. Emitted light should be displaced Earthward by 0.112 m over 3 km. Radially falling clocks should run ''faster'' than relativity predicts — a clock dropped at exactly the escape velocity is at rest in space and runs fastest — with Richard Benish credited for the analysis showing the Vessot rocket experiment was not sensitive enough to decide. Rising muons should live longer than falling ones. And anomalous clock and acceleration effects should appear at the flow boundary between Earth's and the Sun's fields. For entrainment specifically, he predicts that a receding galaxy should show only a first-order Doppler redshift "and not a 2° Doppler red-shift (there should be no galaxial time-dilation)."

==Assessment==

The strongest thing in this paper is the derivation in section 7. The identity between the gravitational redshift formula and the transverse Doppler formula, once ''v''<sup>2</sup> = 2''GM''/''r'' is inserted, is exact and not a coincidence — it is the reason the Painlevé–Gullstrand form of the Schwarzschild metric exists, in which an infalling river of space at the escape velocity is a legitimate coordinate description of the same spacetime. Lindner has independently rediscovered a real and elegant structure, and his citation of Ives, Kirkwood, and Martin shows he is aware the mathematics is not in dispute. The Schwarzschild radius follows in two lines. The observation that ''practical'' relativistic calculations always single out a physically preferred frame — the non-rotating Earth-centred frame for GPS, the barycentric frame for planetary ephemerides — is accurate and worth taking seriously as a philosophical point. So is the observation that half the modern vacuum is an aether under other names.

What weakens the paper is that its philosophical claim is much stronger than its physical one. Because flowing space reproduces the Schwarzschild solution, it is not an alternative theory that can be tested against general relativity; it is a coordinate choice within it. That cuts both ways: it explains why the derivations succeed, and it means most of the listed "predictions not found in any static-space model" are not predictions of a rival theory at all. Several are simply wrong as stated. The claim that light rises at ''c'' − 11.2 km/s and falls at ''c'' + 11.2 km/s ''relative to the Earth's surface'' would be a locally measurable anisotropy in the round-trip speed of light; modern optical-cavity Michelson–Morley experiments constrain such anisotropy to parts in 10<sup>18</sup>, far below the 4 × 10<sup>−5</sup> effect this would represent. The prediction of a 0.112 m vertical displacement of light over 3 km is likewise excluded by ordinary surveying interferometry and by laser ranging, and Lindner's counter-argument — that source and observer share the flow, so the effect cancels — concedes as much while still listing it as a test.

Two further claims collide directly with measurement. That rising muons should live longer than falling ones at the same Earth-frame speed is a first-order-in-''v''<sub>space</sub>/''c'' asymmetry that storage-ring muon lifetime measurements, accurate to better than 10<sup>−3</sup> and performed with muons circulating in both senses, exclude. And the entrainment prediction that a receding galaxy shows only first-order Doppler shift "and no galaxial time-dilation" is contradicted by one of the cleanest results in observational cosmology: the light curves of distant Type Ia supernovae are stretched by exactly (1 + ''z''), and their spectra age at the same rate, a second-order effect measured across the redshift range and confirmed independently by quasar variability timescales. Lindner names this as a discriminating test; the test has been run, and it does not favour entrainment.

The internal structure has soft points too. Appendix A concedes that the flow field does not conserve volume — the ether must be "compressed" or its cells must "condense or simply disappear" as they approach matter — which is to say that the medium's continuity equation is unsatisfied and no dynamics is supplied to fix it. There is no field equation anywhere in the paper, only a velocity profile imposed by hand for an isolated spherical mass; how two overlapping flows superpose, what happens at the saddle point he proposes to test, and how entrainment falls off with distance are all left as things "susceptible to mathematical and experimental modeling." Entrainment is invoked whenever a wind would be embarrassing and suspended whenever one is wanted — space is dragged translationally but not rotationally — and while the frictionless-fluid argument for that asymmetry is stated, it is an assertion about a medium whose constitutive properties are otherwise undefined. Finally, the historical thesis that the aether was suppressed by theism is argued from parallels rather than from evidence, and Mach — a lifelong opponent of religion and metaphysics — is an awkward fit for the genealogy Lindner constructs.

Judged as philosophy of physics, the paper is forceful and largely fair: it is true that relativity's formalism describes measurements rather than asserting an ontology, and Lindner is entitled to want more. Judged as a physical theory, flowing space is best understood not as a refutation of general relativity but as a physically suggestive picture of one of its exact solutions — genuinely valuable as pedagogy, as Lindner himself proposes, and considerably weaker than the paper claims when its distinctive, non-equivalent predictions are checked against the data.
