Presentation of ALFA model at NPA-18&nbsp; 2011

==Overview==

This is Robert Bennett's slide presentation to the 18th [[Natural Philosophy Alliance]] conference in July 2011, with follow-up material from a September video conference. ALFA stands for '''A'''bsolute '''L'''ab '''F'''rame and flexible '''A'''ether. The model's two components are separable and, Bennett insists, must not be conflated: there is a real aether, and there is an absolute frame, "But not the same!" The aether is a flexible medium that can be dragged by matter and can also flow of its own accord; the absolute frame is not the aether but the laboratory — specifically the Earth-Centered Earth-Fixed (ECEF) frame. "Mother Earth" is the frame Newton sought and Einstein rejected.

The presentation departs from the mainstream account at the root rather than at the margin. It holds that special relativity is not merely wrong but ''logically inconsistent'', that the [[Sagnac Effect]] is a direct measurement of aether flow, that the Michelson–Gale result should be read as an aether wind circling a stationary Earth rather than as the Earth's rotation, and that Hertz's convective form of Maxwell's equations — not Maxwell's own — is the correct electrodynamics. The concluding slides are frank about the scope of the claim: relativity refuted, the Big Bang fizzled, the cosmological principle "unprincipled," Mach's principle disproven, and Lorentz transforms, Minkowski space and Riemannian geometry reduced to "Math curios." The deck closes with an open challenge inviting refutation, "using the scientific method and logic," posted at the author's ALFA Challenge blog. Its epigraph, repeated at the end, is "Truth always on the Gallows; Lies forever on the Throne."

==The argument==

===An alleged inconsistency in special relativity===

Bennett opens not with an experiment but with a logic exercise. He states three premises he attributes to special relativity: (I) ''V''<sub>x,y</sub> = −''V''<sub>y,x</sub> for inertial frames, (II) ''V''<sub>ph,x</sub> = ''c'' for a photon, and (III) ''V''<sub>x,x</sub> = 0. Setting ''x'' = ph, premises II and III give ''V''<sub>ph,ph</sub> = ''c'' = 0, a contradiction; and premise I applied to a photon requires ''V''<sub>y,ph</sub>, the velocity of a frame relative to a photon, which he holds to be untestable and therefore outside the scientific method. His methodological point is that a theory with conflicting premises can prove anything: "1 = 0 False, + 0 = 1 + False, 1 = 1 True. So MS science can prove any test of SR is valid." When a contradiction appears, the options are to abandon the theory or eliminate the contradiction, and Bennett takes the first.

He then poses what he calls the dissident paradox — how would one recognise a violation of relativity? — and answers that if ''V''<sub>x,y</sub> ≠ −''V''<sub>y,x</sub> in even one case, a preferred frame exists. A dynamical law containing a velocity-dependent term takes its simplest form in that frame: centripetal force vanishes only for a mass at rest in it, and the Lorentz force reduces to its ''E''-field term only for a charge at rest in it.

===Three phases of aether===

The model treats aether operationally, "avoiding structural assumptions" and their attendant errors, and allows it any property matter has, since matter is taken to be bound aether. Three phases are distinguished: solid, a rigid lattice (Lorentz, Maxwell, Michelson–Morley); flexible passive, dragged by moving matter like water entrained by a propeller (Stokes); and flexible active, an autonomous natural flow "like a river, the Jet or Gulf streams." The last is Bennett's novel category.

The historical tests are re-read against this scheme. Fizeau's 1861 water-pipe experiment confirmed Fresnel partial dragging, and Bennett draws three lessons from it: the aether was measured ''within'' the dragging medium; the reference frame used was the lab frame; and dragging is itself "the first proof of a flexible aether — aether is NOT an absolute frame." Michelson–Morley, on the assumptions of a Copernican heliocentric model and a fixed aether, should have shown a 30 km/s annual signal but yielded roughly 5 km/s, some 15% of expectation. Bennett's complaint is that Michelson entertained four interpretations but "DID NOT INCLUDE THE OBVIOUS — Earth and aether approximately at rest," and that the mainstream settled on either no aether or a co-moving Earth without asking "why not not moving at all?"

===Sagnac as the key test===

The 1913 Sagnac experiment is the pivot. Two counter-rotating beams on a rotating interferometer produce a fringe shift, and Bennett's reading is that the speed of light is anisotropic and "is not ''c'' in either frame." Sagnac himself concluded that rotation fully entrains the nearby aether at ''v'' = ''ωr'', that the change in light speed is a boost for the co-rotating beam and a reduction for the counter-rotating one, and that the effect is independent of source and detector speed.

Bennett then works through the frames. In the lab, Sol = ''V''<sub>ph,ae</sub> + ''V''<sub>ae,lab</sub> = ''c'' + ''v'', matching the data. On the rotor, full dragging predicts ''V''<sub>ae,rot</sub> = 0 and hence Sol = ''c'' — but the measured aether speed on the rotor is still ''v'', the same as in the lab. His resolution — flagged in the slides with "EUREKA!" — is that if the aether speed is ''v'' in both frames despite their relative rotation, then ''V''<sub>ae,rot</sub> = ''V''<sub>ae,lab</sub>, which by the absolute-frame condition means lab = abs. Restated as the '''Absolute Rest Theorem''': "The lab is always at rest with respect to any rotating system, when applying EM laws." In the rotating frame the lab is at rest, whereas relativity would require ''V''<sub>lab,rot</sub> = −''v''. Since the rotor may have any speed, the result is general. The '''ALFA theorem''' follows: whatever reference frame is used, light speed depends only on the aether speed ''in the lab frame''.

Along the way three rivals are dismissed. Special relativity is invalid because a preferred frame exists; Ritz's ballistic theory is invalid because Sagnac shows independence from source speed; a static rigid aether is invalid because it predicts Sol = ''c'' + 0 where ''c'' + ''v'' is measured.

===Michelson–Gale, and a stationary Earth===

The 1925 Michelson–Gale experiment, a Sagnac test on a 1.2-mile optical circuit, is conventionally read as detecting the Earth's rotation, the effect falling off with latitude. Bennett accepts the numbers but reverses the interpretation: "Sagnac's result showed the Earth doesn't rotate," and rotation detection by light "requires an aether medium," so what is detected "could be aether rotation westward around a static Earth." His conclusion is that "an autonomous aetherosphere rotates westward at every latitude in one sidereal day" — a natural wind, not a forced one. He cites the GPS Sagnac correction, east–west radio signal delay, the Foucault pendulum and the Canterbury ring laser gyro as further evidence of the same circulation.

The Michelson–Morley null result is then re-explained rather than explained away: the Sagnac-scale effect is first order in ''v''/''c'' while Michelson–Morley probes only ''v''<sup>2</sup>/''c''<sup>2</sup>, and if the aether surface speed is small, ''V''<sub>ae,lab</sub> ≈ 0 lies beyond the experiment's reach. "ALFA explains the null result as a motionless Earth and slow aether."

===Extensions: Wang, the bucket, and Hertz===

Three further cases are recruited. Dufour and Prunier's 1937 extended Sagnac work is cited for showing that lab and rotor light speeds are equal, that mixing optical components between the two frames changes nothing, and that the effect extends at least 10 cm from the rotor. Ruyong Wang's 2005 fibre-optic conveyor experiment matters because it obtained a Sagnac-type phase shift proportional to ''linear'' conveyor speed rather than rotation, which Bennett takes to show that matter drags aether at its linear speed and that the effect is not intrinsically rotational. He also reads Wang's graph as showing zero intercept in the lab frame — "no orbital/galactic/CMB motion! The absolute speed of the lab frame is ZERO." The Sagnac result's extension to matter waves — calcium atoms, neutrons, electrons — is offered as evidence that ALFA "applies to rotation and translation, photons and particles."

Newton's spinning bucket is analysed on the same pattern, with the bucket playing the rotor and the water motion playing the light beam: the bucket drags aether at ''v'', the aether drags water at ''v''(1 − 1/''n''<sup>2</sup>), a vortex forms, and when the bucket stops the vortex still indicates rotation — with respect to the lab frame. Bennett's verdict is that "Newton was right… almost. His vague concept of absolute space is actually the lab/ECEF frame."

Finally the electrodynamics. Maxwell's equations, Bennett argues, assume a stationary inflexible aether as reference frame and were tested under lab conditions, yet are applied unmodified in other frames, inertial and not. Hertz replaced the partial with the total temporal derivative, ∂/∂''t'' → ''d''/''dt'' = ∂/∂''t'' + ''V''·∇, and ALFA identifies the convective velocity as ''V'' = ''V''<sub>ae,lab</sub>. Faraday's law becomes ∇ × ''E'' = ∂''B''/∂''t'' + ''V''·∇''B'', which is Galilean invariant to first order in ''v''/''c''. Maxwell's forms are then "a subset of the more general Hertz equations… when the aether velocity ''V''<sub>ae,lab</sub> is zero in the laboratory." Bennett grants that Hertz erred in adopting full Stokes dragging, which Fizeau disproved, but holds the convective modification itself to be sound, and applies it to the 1831 Faraday rotor generator — where an emf appears when conductor and magnet spin together with no relative motion — as an anomaly Maxwell's law cannot produce but Hertz's can.

===Absolute time===

The model needs an absolute chronometer, and Bennett lists the requirements: stability, global synchronization, autonomous operation, universal accessibility and immunity from environmental change. Stellar rotation supplies it — "Absolute time = astronomical/stellar/cosmic time" — a master clock displaced, in his account, only when atomic and electromagnetic clocks were introduced in the 1960s.

==Assessment==

The presentation has a genuine methodological virtue: it takes the Sagnac effect seriously as a first-order, unambiguously anisotropic result, and it insists on stating for every experiment which frame the measurement was made in and what the aether was doing there. That bookkeeping discipline is real and is often missing from both sides of aether debates. Bennett's separation of "there is an aether" from "the aether is the absolute frame" is also a sharper distinction than most Lorentzian accounts draw, and his three-phase taxonomy — rigid, passively dragged, autonomously flowing — is a useful way to organise Fizeau, Sagnac, Michelson–Morley and Wang against one another. The choice to close with an open challenge soliciting refutation is the right instinct, and Wang's fibre-optic conveyor result is a legitimately interesting datum that deserves the attention he gives it.

The opening logical argument, however, does not work, and since it is offered as the ground for everything else this matters. Premise I of special relativity is stated for ''inertial frames''; a photon has no rest frame and so cannot be substituted for ''x'', which relativity states explicitly rather than concealing. Deriving a contradiction by substituting a value the premise excludes is not finding an inconsistency in the theory but ignoring its stated domain. The subsequent "1 = 0 ⟹ anything" flourish is therefore doing no work.

The physical core has a more specific problem. The Sagnac effect is not in dispute and is not evidence against relativity: the rotating frame is non-inertial, and special relativity predicts the fringe shift Δ''t'' = 4''Aω''/''c''<sup>2</sup> straightforwardly by integrating in the inertial lab frame, which is exactly why every fibre-optic gyroscope in commercial aviation works to the relativistic formula. Bennett's derivation of the Absolute Rest Theorem depends on his claim that "the aether speed on the rotor is still measured as ''v''" — but this is asserted, not measured; what Sagnac and Dufour–Prunier measured is a fringe shift, and converting it into an "aether speed in the rotor frame" already presupposes the model. The theorem is thus obtained from an interpretation, not from data.

The Michelson–Gale reinterpretation is the deck's weakest point and is testable against measurement in a way the slides do not acknowledge. If the Earth is stationary and an aetherosphere circulates westward in one sidereal day, that circulation must be a property of the aether alone — yet the observed sidereal periods of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn differ from Earth's by factors of two or more, and the rotation of every one of them is independently measured by Doppler shifts across the approaching and receding limbs, which requires the body itself to be turning. The same applies closer to home: the ring laser gyros Bennett cites, including Canterbury's, also measure ''polar motion'' and length-of-day variations at the millisecond level, and these track independently measured mass redistributions in the Earth's atmosphere and core — a wobble of the solid Earth, not of a surrounding medium. His reading of Wang's zero intercept as proving zero absolute lab speed likewise conflicts with the CMB dipole, which gives the solar system a velocity of about 370 km/s and which the slides mention only to dismiss.

Bennett is on firmer ground about Hertz. The convective form ∇ × ''E'' = ∂''B''/∂''t'' + (''V''·∇)''B'' is a real historical alternative, it is Galilean invariant to first order, and the neglect of Hertz's formulation is a genuine episode in the history of electrodynamics. But the Faraday rotor "anomaly" it is invoked to explain is not anomalous: the unipolar generator's emf follows from the Lorentz force on charges in the conductor and has been treated consistently within standard electrodynamics since the 1880s, with no need for a convective term. And Hertz's theory was tested and rejected on grounds Bennett himself concedes — it requires full dragging, which Fizeau's coefficient contradicts — so retaining the mathematics while discarding the physical assumption that motivated it leaves the convective velocity ''V''<sub>ae,lab</sub> as a free parameter with no independent determination.

The concluding slides list consequences rather than derive them, and the gap between the two is the presentation's main structural weakness: a single reinterpretation of one interferometer experiment is taken to overturn cosmology, quantum mechanics, Mach's principle and Riemannian geometry in a single bullet list. Read as what it is — a conference slide deck advancing a definite, unusually explicit geocentric Lorentzian model and inviting rebuttal — it is clear, unusually well organised for its genre, and honest about the size of its claim. Read as an argument, it rests at every load-bearing point on an interpretation of the Sagnac rotor frame that is asserted rather than measured.
