Scott Smith (born 1957) is an American independent researcher and author based in Spokane, Washington. He works outside the institutional science community on topics including Zero Point Energy, Expanding Earth theory, cryogenics and space propulsion, and he has proposed concepts he calls the Zero-Point Energy Craft (Z-PEC) and the Theory of Little Pops (LPD).

Biography

Smith was born in the summer of 1957, shortly before the launch of Sputnik. He has described a lifelong fascination with space and space travel dating from his earliest memories of the first rocket launches and crewed spaceflights of the late 1950s and early 1960s.

Smith accumulated a number of college credits and began a degree in music education, but was unable to complete it because of persistent health issues; he identifies as physically disabled. He has continued to study independently, describing himself as a voluminous reader of technical literature who has also earned credits in mathematics, science, and mechanical and electronic engineering, and who reads patents as a pastime.

Smith is a musician who plays the cello and has studied the violin and piano. He has been active in the New Covenant Fellowship for several decades. He lives in Spokane, Washington, with his wife, Marilyn; the couple have three grown sons and four granddaughters.

Work

Smith describes himself as an inventor whose principal aim has been to develop a simpler and less expensive means of reaching space than conventional rocketry. He and his sons coined the acronym SCOTTY, standing for "Smiths' Coolest Outer-space Transportation Technology Yet," for this line of work.

His two ideas that he considers his first major concepts based on conventional scientific principles and existing technology are the Zero-Point Energy Craft (Z-PEC) and the Theory of Little Pops (LPD). Smith frames Z-PEC as an effort to draw on Zero Point Energy as a power source, and has expressed the hope that such technology could reduce reliance on fossil fuels. His related papers address quantum-vacuum propulsion, the Casimir effect, and proposals concerning the handling of spent nuclear fuel.

These concepts have not been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals or independently validated, and lie outside the scientific mainstream.
