Richard W. Guy is a British-born structural engineer and author known for his work on the Expanding Earth hypothesis and its proposed connection to receding sea levels and the development of ancient civilizations. He is one of the original foundation members of the Expanding Earth Exchange, and the author of several books arguing that the Earth's seas have been slowly receding over geological time as a consequence of an expanding planet.

Biography

Guy is a structural engineer with some forty years of engineering experience across the United States, the Middle East, England and the West Indies. For roughly thirty years he ran a consultancy practice as Chief Engineer and Chief Executive Officer of Amalgamated Design Group Ltd. Over the course of his career he worked on the design and construction of major structures including airports, harbors, docks, highways, bridges, dams and oil refineries, many of them built on land that he observed had once lain beneath the sea. He has resided in the Bronx, New York.

Guy is one of the original, foundation members of the Expanding Earth Exchange, which was founded in California in 1979 by Dr. S. Warren Carey, H. Hugh Wilson and Ralph Groves. Members of the Exchange came from a range of backgrounds in science and engineering, each having arrived at the idea of Earth expansion through their own discipline. Guy stated that during his long engineering career he observed what he interpreted as subtle patterns of Earth expansion in the design and failure of structures, particularly bridges and dams, which he attributed to the phenomenon.

Scientific contributions

Guy's central claim is that the Earth is expanding and that this expansion, rather than the conventional explanation of post-glacial isostatic rebound, accounts for evidence of falling sea levels around the world. He based his argument primarily on mathematical reasoning rather than on geological fieldwork, and accepted plate tectonics only in part, holding that it did not answer all of the relevant questions.

According to Guy, sea-floor spreading continually adds surface area to the Earth. He pointed to the mid-Atlantic rift, the Red Sea and the floor of the Gulf of California as sites where lava is being added to the crust, and interpreted rifts, faults and river valleys, such as those of the Mississippi and Colorado rivers, as expansion features. He argued that over millions of years volcanoes and rifts have added enormous volumes of lava to the Earth's surface, citing formations such as the Snake River Canyon, and that this added material increases the planet's surface area.

Guy proposed that, because the land area expands both above and below the sea, sea levels fall worldwide, producing the "receding seas" for which he said evidence can be found on every continent, including marine fossils in mountain ranges. He further argued that this process shaped human history, contending that ancient civilizations began in high mountains and migrated down river valleys as the seas withdrew, giving as examples the Inca of the Andes, the peoples of the Himalayas, the Chinese, and the civilizations of the Tigris and Euphrates and the Indus valley.

Guy set out these ideas in his 1990 book Is Planet Earth Expanding?, published by the Institute of the Expanding Earth, and developed them further in later works. The Expanding Earth hypothesis as a whole is not accepted by mainstream science; modern satellite measurements have found no significant change in the Earth's radius, and no accepted mechanism exists for a large increase in the planet's mass or volume.
