Richard Joseph Oldani (born 1946) is an American independent theoretical physicist and dairy farmer known for his work on quantum theory, thermodynamics, and natural philosophy. Working largely outside the academic mainstream, he has developed field-based and action-based models of the photon and atomic radiation, and has written critically about the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics. He is a member of the Natural Philosophy Alliance.
Biography
Oldani received a B.S. in Physics in 1969 from the Illinois Institute of Technology. In 1972–1973 he worked as an assistant professor of physics at the Universidad Técnica del Estado in Santiago, Chile. He subsequently owned and operated a family business manufacturing industrial filter bags and dialyzer membranes for many years before retiring. For roughly three decades he and his family operated a dairy farm in Clymer, in western New York state, and he has described the long hours of physical labor involved in farm work as well suited to reflecting on theoretical physics.
Before the rise of the internet, Oldani was largely isolated from the physics community and had published only a single paper. After going online he became familiar with the Natural Philosophy Alliance (NPA) and joined the organization. He has credited the late John Chappell, founder of the NPA, and the Stanford visiting scholar Eddie Oshins with helping him learn the standard terminology and fundamentals of quantum theory, which enabled him to communicate his ideas to professional physicists.
Scientific contributions
Oldani's research concentrates on the foundations of quantum mechanics, quantum electrodynamics, and the structure of the photon. Departing from the standard interpretation, he has proposed a field-based model in which the photon is treated as a discrete entity with particle-like properties at its core surrounded by continuous fields that superpose linearly, an approach he presents as analogous to the electron and as satisfying the requirements of classical, relativistic, and quantum theory simultaneously.
Much of his work draws on the action principle and Lagrangian methods. He has argued for a "fully relativistic" or Lagrangian formulation of quantum mechanics and atomic structure, and for a theory of radiation processes that adheres strictly to the conservation laws. Revisiting Einstein's early reasoning about the nature of light from roughly 1906–1909, Oldani contends that Einstein's intuitions about the photon and his later reservations about quantum mechanics were sound, and he uses them as a starting point for his own field model. These positions place his work outside mainstream quantum electrodynamics, and his conclusions are not generally accepted by the physics community.
