James Keele (born January 17, 1937) is an American electrical engineer and independent researcher known for his work on electrodynamics, including a reformulation of the electromagnetic force based on Einstein's special relativity, and for experimental investigations of Ampère's Law and the current element. He is a member of the Natural Philosophy Alliance / Chappell Natural Philosophy Society community of dissident-science researchers.

Biography

Keele was born in 1937 in the Hill Country of Texas and grew up in various parts of the state, including Archer City, Texas, where The Last Picture Show was later filmed. He also spent several years in Oklahoma. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1959 with a B.S. in electrical engineering, and then attended the University of Texas, where he served as a teaching assistant in the electrical engineering department and earned an M.S. in electrical engineering in 1961. He pursued further study at Southern Methodist University and at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Keele spent most of his career, roughly thirty years, working in the research and development divisions of several companies. Among the most notable was his work with Texas Instruments on government products. In semi-retirement he settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he has been a member of the Energy Working Group of the Santa Fe Sustainability Commission.

Outside of his physics research, Keele has pursued the design and construction of electric vehicles. He converted several older automobiles, including an '84 Volkswagen Rabbit, and a motorcycle to all-electric operation, and designed and built the motor controllers and battery chargers used in these conversions.

Scientific contributions

Keele's principal research concerns the electrodynamics of moving charges and the force between current elements. Working outside the mainstream physics establishment, he developed what he termed an "Einsteinian Electrodynamics," obtained by applying a transformation derived from Einstein's special relativity. Within this framework he presented laws and formulas for the forces, energy levels, and induction between relatively moving isolated charges, between a current element and an isolated charge, and between current elements.

Keele designed and performed laboratory experiments intended to test these relationships. He reported that his measurements supported both an induction formula derived from his Einsteinian Electrodynamics and the classical form of Ampère's Law originally established by André-Marie Ampère from experiments around 1822. He argued that his approach reveals connections between special relativity and earlier formulations such as the classical Ampère force law and Newton's Third Law. His papers also address topics including energy storage in inductors, the unification of mass changes and potential-energy changes, elementary particles, and a "no field" interpretation of the Bohr atom.
