Alan Newman (born 14 June 1949) is a British engineer and independent theorist known for his critical writing on special relativity and for his own proposals concerning gravity, inertia and the expansion of the universe. His work has appeared in Galilean Electrodynamics and in the Proceedings of the Natural Philosophy Alliance.

Biography

Newman was born in 1949 in Birmingham, England, the only son of Lilian and Cyril Newman. His mother, who had worked as a capstan operator in Birmingham during the Second World War and later as an office cleaner, died in 1997. Newman also had two older stepsisters, June and Rita.

Having not passed the British eleven-plus examination, Newman attended Portland Road Secondary Modern School in Edgbaston, leaving in 1965. He then took up an apprenticeship in engineering design with the car body manufacturer Fisher and Ludlow Ltd, then part of the BMC group. A knee injury interrupted his college attendance and brought the apprenticeship to an end after about three years, and he subsequently held a variety of occupations before returning to engineering work.

In 1976 Newman married his wife, Chrissie. The couple had two sons, James and Daniel, and moved to Gloucestershire, settling at Churchdown.

Scientific contributions

Newman's interest in physics was renewed in 1998 after reading Albert Einstein's Relativity: The Special and the General Theory. He came to the view that the special theory of relativity contained a fundamental flaw, and stated that he identified what he regarded as a mathematical error in the theory in September 1999. In 2001 he corresponded with the physicist Paul Marmet, who was likewise critical of the theory.

Newman's article "Misconceptions Governing SRT and Interpretations of Related Experimental Results" was published in Galilean Electrodynamics in 2006. He subsequently developed his own theory addressing gravity, which he published in Galilean Electrodynamics and in the Proceedings of the Natural Philosophy Alliance in 2007. This work forms the basis of his papers on what he termed "The Perpetual Emergence of Space".
