"A New Vocabulary to Replace ‘AI’" is an article by David de Hilster published on 15 June 2025 on NLU Global.

De Hilster attacks the vocabulary the field has adopted rather than its products. “Prompt engineering” he regards as an insult to engineering — poking a system with different sticks to elicit a useful response is querying, not engineering. “Generative AI” he rejects on the grounds that statistical mappings of text, however clever and however useful, are not intelligent. The piece is a proposal to describe these tools in words that say what they actually do.
